GOD IS OUR NECESSITY

PSALM 42

“My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.”

Psalm 42:2a

A few months ago I read the following story in a book about spirituality:  A teacher said to his disciple: “If you have need of God…God will come to you.” The disciple did not understand these words very well, but one day his teacher asked him to submerge himself in water. As he did so, the teacher held him underneath the water, until the disciple became frantically agitated because he couldn't breathe.  Upon releasing him, the teacher asked him:

“What did you feel when you were under water?”

“A great need to breathe,” replied the disciple.

“Is your need of God just as strong?”

“Oh, no.”

“Well, when it is, you will find God.”

This dialogue contains a great teaching.  We should acknowledge that our need of God is closely related to the problems that we wish to resolve in our lives. Like the psalmist, we should have souls that are thirsty for God, not just in times of crisis, but at each moment of our existence. This is how we will find God.

Prayer: Eternal God, allow our souls to be so thirsty for you that we will seek and find you. Amen.

NECESIDAD DE DIOS

SALMO 42

“Mi alma tiene sed de Dios, del Dios vivo”

Salmo 42:2a

Hace unos meses leí en un libro de espiritualidad la siguiente historia: Se cuenta que un maestro le dijo a su discípulo: “Si necesitas de Dios… Dios vendrá a ti”. El discípulo no entendió muy bien estas palabras, pero un día fue invitado por el maestro a sumergirse en el agua. Al hacerlo, el maestro lo retuvo debajo del agua, hasta que el discípulo comenzó a agitarse porque no podía respirar. Al soltarlo, le preguntó:

-¿Qué has sentido debajo del agua?

-Una fuerte necesidad de respirar-respondió el discípulo.

-¿Es así de fuerte tu necesidad de Dios?

- Oh no.

-Pues cuando lo sea, hallarás a Dios.

Este diálogo encierra una gran enseñanza. Debemos reconocer que nuestra necesidad de Dios está muy relacionada con problemas que deseamos resolver en nuestra vida. Como el salmista debemos tener un alma sedienta de Dios, pero no sólo en las crisis, sino en cada minuto de nuestra existencia. Es así como hallaremos a Dios.

Oración: Dios eterno, permite que nuestra alma esté tan sedienta de ti como para buscarte y hallarte. Amén.

KNOWING HOW TO BEAR THE LOAD

MATTHEW 11:25-30

“The testing of your faith develops perseverance.”

James 1:3

Members of certain African tribes position a heavy load on top of their heads when they need to cross a large river. Doing so allows them to tread steadily and to always maintain perfect balance with their eyes on the distant horizon. Isn't that a beautiful image of a believer who is going through a time of testing and  who is carrying a heavy load?

I should keep my eyes on Jesus, the author of faith, so that I don’t allow myself to succumb to discouragement, or to be fearful of the powerful waves.

I should raise my load up high,   trusting in the Lord’s help.  Then I will find that the load is lighter than I had feared.

I should be certain of where to direct my steps, leaning on prayer and the Word, in order to discern the will of God in any everyday decision in my life.

I should maintain my balance. Testing makes us aware of our weaknesses. It draws us closer to the Lord.

We need to know how to carry our load “on top of our heads” and the Lord will go with us.

Prayer: God of goodness, thank you for strengthening us and for allowing us to bear our load in victory. Amen.

SABER LLEVAR LA CARGA

MATEO 11:25-30

“La prueba de vuestra fe produce paciencia”

Santiago 1:3

Los miembros de ciertas tribus africanas se colocan una pesada carga sobre la cabeza cuando deben vadear un río importante. Esto les permite caminar con paso seguro y mantenerse siempre en perfecto equilibrio con la mirada puesta en la lejanía. ¿No es esta una hermosa imagen del creyente que atraviesa una prueba cuya carga pesa sobre él?

Debo poner los ojos en Jesús, el autor de la fe, para no dejarme llevar por el desaliento, ni estar preocupados por la fuerza de las olas.

Debo llevar mi carga bien erguido, con confianza en la ayuda de mi Señor. Entonces experimentaré que la prueba es menos pesada de lo que temía.

Debo asegurar mis pasos, apoyándome en la oración y la Palabra, para discernir la voluntad de Dios en cualquier decisión cotidiana de mi vida.

Debo mantener mi equilibro. La prueba nos hace tomar conciencia de nuestra flaqueza. Nos acerca al Señor

Sepamos llevar la carga “sobre la cabeza” y el Señor irá con nosotros.

Oración: Dios bueno, gracias porque tú nos fortaleces y nos permites llevar la carga en victoria. Amén.

THE POWER OF FAITH

1 JOHN 5:1-12

“…for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.”

1 John 5:4

Tribulation and sickness almost always produce great anxiety and a feeling of loneliness in us.  

I pray to God every day to remove my anxiety, doubt and fear.  The response is never long in coming, the Lord answers prayer.  He reassures us that He alone changes our hearts and minds.

One day I was convalescing in bed and I was entertaining myself by counting the cracks in the ceiling, a habit I’d formed, when suddenly I sensed something like a calm and gentle whisper saying to me: “Be still and know that I am God.”  “Do not be fearful, for I am with you.”In an instant all of my anxiety disappeared, and in full confidence I gave myself over to resting. Even though I had no idea what my future held, I knew that it was in God’s hands. The months passed by and I was finally able to recover my health.  Today I can tell you that I was not overcome by fear. His company was real at every moment.  How great is God’s Omnipotence!

Prayer: Lord, thank you for allowing us the experience to learn that, in you, loneliness and fear are turned into victory. We trust in you.  Amen.

EL PODER DE LA FE

1 JUAN 5:1-12

“Porque todo lo que es hijo de Dios vence al mundo.

Nuestra fe nos ha dado la victoria”

1 Juan 5:4

Las tribulaciones y enfermedades casi siempre producen en nosotros una gran ansiedad y un sentimiento de soledad. Todos los días pido a Dios que quite de mí la ansiedad, la duda y el temor. La respuesta nunca se hace esperar, el Señor contesta las oraciones. Nos da la seguridad de que sólo Él cambia nuestros corazones y mentes.

Un día me encontraba convaleciente en un lecho y me entretenía contando las cuarteaduras del techo, hábito que había formado, cuando repentinamente sentí como un silbido quieto y apacible que me decía: “Estad quietos y conoced que soy Dios” “No temas que yo estoy contigo”. Al instante desapareció toda mi ansiedad, y con fe plena me entregué al reposo. Aunque ignoraba lo que el porvenir me tenía reservado, el futuro estaba en las manos de Dios. Pasaron los meses y al fin logre recuperar la salud. Hoy puedo decirles que el temor no se apoderó de mí. Su compañía fue real en todo momento. ¡Cuán grande es la Omnipotencia de Dios!

Oración: Señor, gracias porque la experiencia nos dice que en ti la soledad y el temor se tornan en victoria. Confiamos en ti. Amén.

GOD IN OUR DIFFICULT MOMENTS

ROMANS 8:22-27

“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.”

Romans 8:26

We were speechless.  We did not have answers to the harrowing questions of the young mother who had lost her months-old baby. She kept asking me those anguished questions once posed by Job: Why did God allow this death?  Why did such an innocent creature have to die? 

In such circumstances it does not suffice to be armed with replies that only result, in most cases, in silencing the questions.  In situations such as these, my answers and my knowledge of the Word are insufficient. I need to acknowledge the right of others to express their anguish and their rebellion.

We need only allow the Spirit to take charge of the replies, and to work in my life and in the life of those who are suffering the kind of pain that cannot be explained with doctrine. Having an answer to everything is like trying to play the role of the Spirit.  In such moments, let us seek the divine wisdom needed in order to give comfort to others.

Prayer: God of love and mercy, give us the wisdom to decipher your mysteries. Amen.

DIOS EN MOMENTOS DIFÍCILES

ROMANOS 8:22-27

“De igual manera, el Espíritu nos ayuda en nuestra

debilidad. Porque no sabemos orar como es debido,

pero el Espíritu mismo ruega a Dios por nosotros,

con gemidos que no pueden expresarse con palabras”

Romanos 8:26

Nos quedamos sin palabras. No teníamos respuestas a las preguntas desgarradoras de la joven madre que había perdido a su bebé de apenas unos meses de vida. Me repetía las angustiosas preguntas de Job: ¿Por qué Dios permitía esa muerte? ¿Por qué murió esta criatura inocente? En situaciones así  no alcanza  armarnos de frases hechas que sólo logran, en el mejor de los casos, silenciar las preguntas. En situaciones así mis respuestas y conocimientos de la Palabra  no son suficientes. Debo reconocer en los demás su libertad para expresar su angustia y rebeldía. Sólo nos queda entonces dejar que el Espíritu se haga cargo de las respuestas, y obre en mi vida y en la vida de los que sufren dolores que no se pueden explicar con doctrinas. Tener respuesta para todo es pretender ocupar el lugar del Espíritu. En momentos así pidamos sabiduría divina para  consolar.

Oración: Dios de amor y misericordia, danos sabiduría para descifrar tus misterios. Amén.

THE AGE OF WISDOM

MATTHEW 5:13-16

“Jesus said: ‘So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you…”

Matthew 7:12

Many people think that the elderly always receive more than they give.  But they are often the ones who give more of themselves, in spite of their limited resources and energy:  the affection with which the elderly share their time and wisdom with their grandchildren; the sacrifices they make to ensure that their family receives its daily bread…

At the entrance of the home for the elderly where I live there is a sign that says: “Good care is our best task.” My husband and I have reconfirmed this. One of the residents always brought joy and consideration to all. He planted a garden next to the building and tended it as long as his strength permitted.  Looking after the wellbeing of others is a Christian’s foundation. If we ask God, he will bless our efforts.

Prayer: Beloved God, give us the wisdom to be able to guide others to follow your teachings in our old age. We ask for your blessings upon the most elderly in our families, those who are sick or alone.  Give them peace and joy. Through Jesus Christ, Amen.

Aniversario de la IPR de San Nicolás de Bari

LA EDAD DE LA SABIDURÍA

MATEO 5:13-16

“Jesús dijo: Todas las cosas que queráis

que los hombres hagan con vosotros,

así también haced vosotros con ellos”

Mateo 7:12

Muchos piensan que los ancianos siempre reciben más de lo que dan. Pero muy a menudo son ellos los que dan más de sí,  a pesar de su limitación de recursos y energías: el cariño con el que los ancianos comparten su tiempo y sabiduría con sus nietos, los sacrificios para que no falte el pan cotidiano a la familia… A la entrada del hogar para ancianos donde vivo hay un rótulo que dice: “El buen cuidado es nuestra mejor tarea”. Mi esposo y yo lo hemos confirmado. Uno de los residentes siempre brindó alegría y consideración a todos. Sembró un jardín al lado del edificio y lo cuidó mientras sus fuerzas lo permitieron. Ver por el bienestar de otros es el fundamento del cristiano. Si lo pedimos a Dios, Él bendecirá nuestros esfuerzos.

Oración: Dios amado, danos sabiduría para que en nuestra vejez podamos guiar a otros a seguir tus enseñanzas. Pedimos tus bendiciones para los más ancianos de nuestra familia, los que están enfermos, o solos. Dale paz y gozo. Por Jesucristo, amén.

WHAT DO WE LACK?

PSALM 23

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not be in want.”

Psalm 23:1

How can we truly make Christ the center of our lives and also our peace? The truth is that this is not an easy thing to do every single day. Psalm 23 is one of the best known and loved of the psalms. If we pay careful attention to its verses, it can help us to attain peace.

The psalmist says: “I shall not be in want.” But we seem to always be in want of so many things.  However, if we stop and think about it, how many things do we really need to have in life? Perhaps we could make a list of priorities so that we can later sincerely go over what we wrote down. We can see how many of those things are truly necessary if we live a life which conforms to divine teachings.

If we truly had God as our shepherd, many of our priorities would change and we would realize all of the sacred gifts that God gives us each day.  The Lord is the Shepherd, the one who loves and cares for us, who knows and protects us. Let us work together for the Kingdom of God, confident that with Him at our side, we shall want for nothing.

Prayer: Father, why do I have to fear when you have promised to sustain me?  Help me to trust in you more.  Amen.

¿QUÉ NOS FALTA?

SALMO 23

“El Señor es mi pastor, nada me faltará”

Salmo 23:1

¿Cómo lograr que de veras Cristo sea el centro de nuestra vida y también nuestra paz? La verdad es que vivirlo cada día no es tema tan sencillo. El Salmo 23 es de los más conocidos y queridos. Si le prestamos mayor atención, nos puede ayudar a tener esa paz. El salmista expresa: “Nada me faltará”. Sin embargo, estamos detrás de tantas cosas. Pensemos un poco ¿Qué cosas realmente hacen falta en la vida? Tal vez podamos hacer una lista de prioridades para luego mirar con sinceridad lo que anotamos. Veamos cuánto de todo eso es realmente necesario si vivimos una vida conforme a las enseñanzas divinas. Si de verdad tuviéramos a Dios como nuestro pastor muchas de nuestras prioridades cambiarían y sintiéramos cuantas cosas sagradas Dios nos regala cada día. El Señor es el Pastor, el que nos cuida y nos ama, nos conoce y nos defiende. Trabajemos juntos por el Reino de Dios, confiados de que junto a Él, nada nos faltará.

Oración: Padre ¿Por qué he de tener temor si tú me prometes sostén? Ayúdame a confiar más en ti. Amén.

WHAT NEVER FAILS

JOSHUA 1:1-9

“...I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Joshua 1:5b

A dramatic arts professor used to tell his students over and over again: “Put all of your thinking into the role that you are playing.” This was a good piece of advice then and it is good now. In order for life to be an enchanting and useful drama, it is necessary to saturate the mind with thoughts of success, not with ideas of failure.  God enhances our highest aspirations and encourages those with fewer talents. Sometimes we don’t understand his plans for our life, but we can be sure of one thing:  He is always by our side.

God gave Joshua a faithful promise: “As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

Even though He is very close to us at all times, we recognize His presence when we seek His communion. Have it present in all your paths, and He will direct your steps through the paths of certainty.

Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for giving us understanding and security. Amen.

 LO QUE NUNCA  FALLA

JOSUÉ 1:1-9

“...estaré contigo; no te dejaré, ni te desampararé”

Josué 1:5b

Un profesor de dramaturgia acostumbraba a repetir una y otra vez a sus estudiantes: “Pon todo tu pensamiento en el papel que te toca desempeñar”. Este consejo fue bueno entonces y es bueno ahora.

Para que la vida resulte de un dramatismo encantador y útil es menester saturar la mente con pensamientos de éxito, no con ideas de fracaso. Dios engrandece nuestras aspiraciones más elevadas y alienta al de escasos talentos. A veces no comprendemos sus planes para nuestra vida, pero de una cosa estamos seguros: siempre está  a nuestro lado.

Dios le dio a Josué una fiel promesa: “Que como estuve con Moisés, así estaré contigo; no te dejaré ni te desampararé”

Él está muy cerca en todo momento, pero reconocemos su presencia cuando buscamos su comunión. Tenle presente en todos tus caminos, y Él dirigirá tus pasos por la senda de seguridad.

Oración: Gracias Señor, porque tú nos das comprensión y seguridad. Amén.

THE GREATEST ONE

MARK 9:33-37

“Sitting down, Jesus called the Twelve and said, ‘If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all.’”

Mark 9:35

When our children begin to attend school, we often say to them: “Study hard so you can be the best.”  Or when they participate in some competition, we encourage them to win in order to demonstrate their abilities. We do it, consciously or not, more than anything in order to inflate our own egos. We rarely think about the child and his abilities.  Oftentimes we hope for them to realize whatever we were not able to achieve in life. Wanting to be first, the most important, the only one, occasionally implies not looking around ourselves, not realizing that there is someone at our side who needs our presence, our time and our affection.  What matters is not that we be first, but that, in order to attain our goal, we do so with a spirit of solidarity. Let us not try to achieve our objectives at any cost, without contemplating the consequences that doing so could bring to those around us.

Prayer: Lord, help us to be aware that our lives should be an experience together with others, through the strength of your Spirit, Amen.

 LO MÁS IMPORTANTE

MARCOS 9:33-37

“Entonces Jesús se sentó, llamó a los doce  y les dijo:

Si alguien quiere ser el primero, deberá ser

el último de todos y servirlo a todos ”

Marcos 9:35

Cuando nuestros hijos comienzan en la escuela, muchas veces les decimos: “estudia para ser el mejor”, o cuando participan de alguna competencia los alentamos a ganar para que demuestren sus capacidades. Lo hacemos, a conciencia o no, más que nada para aumentar nuestro ego. Pocas veces pensamos en el niño y su capacidad. A menudo esperamos que realicen aquello que no pudimos lograr nosotros en la vida. Sin embargo, Jesús reprende a los discípulos y les explica que lo importante no es ser el primero. Querer ser el primero, el más importante, el único, implica en ocasiones, no mirar alrededor, no darse cuenta de que a nuestro lado alguien espera nuestra presencia, tiempo y afecto. No importa si no llegamos primero, pero sí es fundamental que, para llegar a nuestra meta, lo hagamos con sentimiento solidario. No intentemos lograr nuestros objetivos al precio que sea, sin contemplar qué consecuencias puede acarrear esto a los que nos rodean.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a tomar conciencia de que nuestra vida debe ser una experiencia con otros, por la fuerza de tu Espíritu. Amén.

CHRIST PROVIDES OUR SHADE

PSALM 121

“The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night.”

Psalm 121:6

Summertime is the favorite season of the year for many people. However, its excessive heat can be dangerous. Public warnings of extreme heat are made so that people can protect themselves from dehydration. After spending much time in the burning sun, it is refreshing to rest in the shade.

At times the “excessive heat” burns in our lives. We experience problems and concerns for our family, our work, our health, or for the future.  We need to remember that in those moments Jesus provides the “shade” we need to confront all of the “heat”.  He gives us refuge and strength to face the challenges that arise.

Christ provides the shade for the extreme heat waves in our lives. Thanks to Him, our long-term prognosis is life eternal at his side

Prayer: Lord, you are the best friend of all. It is a privilege to take everything to you in prayer. Amen.

 CRISTO PROVEE LA SOMBRA

SALMO 121

“El sol no te hará daño de día, ni la luna de noche”

Salmo 121:6

Para  muchas personas el verano es la estación favorita del año. Sin embargo, el calor excesivo puede ser peligroso. Los avisos de extremo calor se emiten para que las personas se protejan de la deshidratación. Después de pasar mucho tiempo en el ardiente sol, es refrescante descansar a la sombra.

Algunas veces el “calor” se enciende en nuestras vidas. Tenemos problemas y nos preocupamos por nuestros familiares, por nuestros trabajos, por la salud o por el futuro. En esos momentos debemos recordar que Jesús nos provee la “sombra” que necesitamos para hacerle frente a todo “calor”. Él nos da refugio y fortaleza para encarar los retos que se nos presentan.

Cristo provee la sombra para todas nuestras olas de extremo calor. Gracias a Él, nuestro pronóstico de largo plazo es la vida eterna junto a Él.

Oración: Señor, tú eres el mejor de los amigos. Es un privilegio llevarlo todo a ti en oración. Amén. 

MONDAY, APRIL 21 MARK 4:35-41

MONDAY, APRIL 21

EVEN THOUGH I WALK THROUGH THE VALLEY OF THE SHADOW OF DEATH

MARK 4:35-41

“A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, don’t you care if we drown?’”

Mark 4:37-38

There are times in a believer’s life when it seems that we are at the heights of our faith experience.  Jesus is near; we feel his presence at our side. This is when we are willing to give much of ourselves for the Kingdom of God, in obedience and with love. We commit to working projects alongside the sisters and brothers in our congregation.

However, after a while, from the heights we tumble to the valley, and at times we fall to the bottom. That is when, in spite of our faith, serious problems arise. They can be related to our health, or to our finances, or to our family; or to various other issues and concerns. There will be anguish, pain, and suffering; there will be fear, doubt, and disorientation. “Where are you, Lord?  Don’t you care if we are dying?”

It is good to know that in those moments God is most faithful to the human being who abides in Him. What a great promise!

Prayer: God of power, help us so that our faith will never falter. In the name of Christ who conquered death. Amen.  

AUNQUE ANDE EN VALLE DE SOMBRA

MARCOS 4:35-41

“En esto se desató una tormenta, con un viento tan fuerte que las olas caían sobre la barca, de modo que se llenaba de agua. Pero Jesús se había dormido en la parte de atrás, apoyado sobre una almohada. Lo despertaron y dijeron: ¡Maestro! ¿No te importa que nos estemos hundiendo?”

Marcos 4:37-38

A veces un creyente está como en la cima en sus experiencias de fe. Jesús está cerca, lo siente a su lado. Es cuando se está dispuesto a dar mucho por el Reino de Dios, en obediencia y con amor. Se compromete en proyectos junto a las hermanas y los hermanos de la congregación.

Pero, de a ratos, de la cima se desliza al valle, y  a veces cae al precipicio. Es cuando, a pesar de la fe, surgen problemas serios. Pueden ser de salud, o económicos, o familiares; o varios relacionados entre sí. Habrá angustia, dolor y sufrimiento; habrá miedo, duda y desorientación. “¿Dónde estás Señor? ¿No te importa que estemos sucumbiendo?”

Es bueno saber que Dios en esos momentos es más fiel con el ser humano que éste con Él. ¡Qué gran promesa!

Oración: Dios de poder, ayúdanos para que nuestra fe nunca flaquee. En el nombre de Cristo que venció la muerte. Amén.

Easter Sunday

HE IS ALIVE!

LUKE 24:1-12

“And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.”

1 Corinthians 15:14

The women went to Jesus’ tomb to prepare the body and instead found something quite unexpected. They were very much afraid, but after listening to those men in resplendent white clothing, they left convinced that something extraordinary had taken place. When the disciples arrived at the empty tomb, they “did not believe the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense.” A possible version of the story today would say that “the news sounded like wives’ tales to them”. Imagine what would have become the explanation for Jesus’ displacement, if instead of having been witnessed by women, his spokespersons, the Good News of the Resurrection had instead remained a mere “wives’ tale”!

I like the way that the story proposes the unexpected as that which prepares us for understanding the mystery of the empty tomb. Do you continue to tremble before the unexpected, before that which runs contrary to your logical reasoning, in spite of knowing that faith means being confident of what cannot be seen? Are you still seeking and proclaiming a dead Jesus instead of the Resurrected One?  It is not a question of “wives’ tales,” but rather of commitment in the proclamation of this truth:  He is alive!

Prayer: Lord, conqueror of death, you who open life’s doors to us each and every day, allow us to live in the hope of the resurrection. Amen.

Pascua de Resurrección

¡ÉL ESTÁ VIVO!

LUCAS  24:1-12

“Si Cristo no resucitó, esta buena noticia que

anunciamos no sirve para nada,  y de nada sirve tampoco

que ustedes crean en Cristo.”                   1 Corintios 15:14

Las mujeres fueron a la tumba de Jesús para preparar el cadáver y se encontraron con algo inesperado. Se asustaron mucho, pero luego de escuchar a aquellos varones de vestiduras resplandecientes, salieron convencidas de lo extraordinario que había sucedido. Al contarlo a los discípulos, éstos “no les creyeron, sino que pensaron que se habían vuelto locas”. Una versión actual de la  historia tal vez diría que la novedad les pareció “chismes de mujeres”. ¡Qué hubiese sido del movimiento de Jesús si por el hecho de haber sido las mujeres, sus portavoces, la Buena Noticia de la Resurrección se hubiese quedado en aquello de “puro cuento”! Me gusta como el relato propone lo inesperado como lo que nos prepara para entender el misterio de la tumba vacía. ¿Sigues tú temblando ante lo inesperado, ante lo que va contra tu lógica racional, a pesar de saber que la fe es la confianza en lo que no se ve? ¿Sigues buscando y proclamando un Jesús muerto y no al Resucitado? No es cuestión de “chismes de mujeres”, sino de compromiso en la proclamación de esta verdad: ¡Él está vivo!

Oración: Señor, vencedor de la muerte, tú que nos abres las puertas de la vida en este día y siempre, concédenos que vivamos en la esperanza de la resurrección. Amén.

THE DAY BEFORE

“You have made known to me the path of life;

You will fill me with joy in your presence,

With eternal pleasures at your right hand.”

Psalm 16:11

It was not the first time I had directed the morning service on the day prior to Easter Sunday.  I had previously had that privilege, but this was my first time doing it from a wheelchair.  I felt nervous, afraid that making my way to the altar might bump some object to the ground. Nevertheless, my joy was greater than my worries. Even though I could not walk and was in pain, I had the absolute certainty that Jesus Christ was showing me a new life. The future was uncertain, but I felt that the company of my Lord was more powerful than any threat.  And that is how embarrassment gave way to praise and I was able to sing joyfully to the resurrected Jesus. That morning I began to understand that beyond pain and physical limitations lays a completely new life that Jesus gives us each day.  I understood that the abundant life does not depend on favorable circumstances, but rather on the presence of his Spirit in the world and in our lives.  Tomorrow on Easter we will experience great things. God’s daily presence fills my life with joy in spite of adverse circumstances.

Prayer: Lord of eternal life, help me to see that my joy does not depend on the circumstances of my earthly life, but rather on your faithful and permanent company. Thank you for Jesus, who conquered the tremendous limitation of death. Amen.

EN LA VÍSPERA

ISAÍAS 35:1-10

“Me mostrarás la senda de la vida; en tu presencia

hay plenitud de gozo, delicias  a tu diestra para siempre”

Salmo 16:11

No era la primera vez que dirigía el culto matutino previo a la Resurrección. Anteriormente había tenido ese privilegio, pero esta era la primera vez que lo hacia desde una silla de ruedas. Me sentía nerviosa, temía que mis desplazamientos al altar pudieran tirar algún objeto. Sin embargo, mi gozo era mayor que mi preocupación. Aunque no podía caminar y me sentía adolorida, tenía la absoluta seguridad de que Jesucristo estaba mostrándome una nueva vida. El futuro era incierto, pero sentí que la compañía de mi Señor era más poderosa que cualquier amenaza. Por eso la pena cedió su paso a la alabanza y pude cantar con júbilo al Jesús resucitado. Esa mañana empecé a experimentar que más allá del dolor y las limitaciones físicas está la vida completa que Jesús nos da cada día. Comprendí que la plenitud de la vida no depende de las circunstancias  favorables, sino de la presencia de su Espíritu en el mundo y en nuestra vida. Mañana en su resurrección sentiremos grandes cosas. La presencia cotidiana de Dios llena mi vida de gozo a pesar de las circunstancias adversas.

Oración: Señor de la vida eterna, ayúdame a ver que mi gozo no depende de las circunstancias de mi vida terrenal, sino de tu compañía fiel y permanente. Gracias por Jesús que venció la tremenda limitación de la muerte. Amén.

Good Friday

SUFFERING AND GLORY

ISAIAH 53:5-12

“He was pierced for our transgressions,

He was crushed for our iniquities...”            Isaiah 53:5

After watching the reactions of the South Africans to the death of their leader Nelson Mandela on television , I questioned our traditional interpretation of the final act of our earthly existence. Those dancing men and women transmitted a lively message more in sync with the Christian faith in the resurrection than with the concept of tragedy and disgrace we usually associate death.

This made me think that, facing death, the final balance is more in favor of achievement than of error. Human suffering is incarnated within the figure of a servant, including that of a dishonorable death.  But its pain can be overcome because this form of death is acceptable, it is innocent, it is for others and it ends in victory. The death of Jesus Christ is a victorious death, preparing us for the most intimate communion with God, with others and with the universe.   The full significance of his death became clear with a life that ended with a great affirmation:  “It is finished.”  The cross, a symbol of humiliation and suffering, is transformed by a powerful act of God into glory and triumph.  

Prayer: God of Life, through the Passion of Christ, our Lord, you have destroyed death, sanctify and protect us always. Amen.

SUFRIMIENTO Y GLORIA

ISAÍAS  53:5-12

“Él fue herido por nuestras rebeliones,

       fue golpeado por nuestras maldades.”            Isaías 53:5

Tras ver por televisión las imágenes sobre las reacciones del pueblo sudafricano ante la muerte de su líder Nelson Mandela, me cuestioné la interpretación que tradicionalmente hacemos del acto final de nuestra existencia terrenal. Aquellos hombres y mujeres danzando me transmitieron un vivo mensaje mucho más en sintonía con la prédica cristiana de la fe en la resurrección, que ese concepto de tragedia y desgracia, tan arraigado con que solemos rodear a la muerte. Esto me hizo pensar que, de frente a la muerte, el balance final está más a favor de los logros que de las equivocaciones. En la figura del ciervo se encarna el sufrimiento humano, incluido el de la muerte deshonrosa. Pero el dolor se supera, porque la muerte es aceptada, es inocente, es por otros y termina en victoria. La muerte de Jesucristo es una muerte victoriosa, nos prepara para la comunión más íntima con Dios, con los demás y con el universo. Así, porta pleno sentido por cuanto la vida es acabada con esta gran afirmación: “Todo está cumplido”. La cruz, símbolo de humillación y sufrimiento, se transforma por la acción poderosa de Dios en gloria y triunfo.

Oración: Dios de la Vida, que por la Pasión de Cristo, nuestro Señor, has destruido la muerte, santifícanos y protégenos siempre. Amén.

THE SACRED MEAL

LUKE 22:14-20

“Do this in remembrance of me.”

Luke 22:19

Jesus celebrated the feast of Passover together with his disciples with a meal around a table. His anguish for all that he knew he would have to suffer did not tarnish the sacredness of this moment. My grandmother always says that eating is an art and she truly relishes watching us enjoy her meals. Most people eat in a hurry, almost without tasting their food.  It is God who prepares each day’s banquet, and therefore even if it’s only a piece of bread, we should give this moment the sacredness it deserves, and even more so when the meal is shared among our loved ones.

Praying in thankfulness for our food, enjoying each mouthful with a grateful heart, listening to stories around the table, makes each person at our side feel good sharing this moment alongside of us, serving the food, the water, actions such as these make each meal a holy one.  Today when we celebrate the Last Supper, we should remember that each day’s problems cannot make us forget that God prepares a banquet for us every day, with hands and gestures of love toward those who share with us the way of abundant life that Jesus showed us.

Prayer: Lord, help us to celebrate life together with us our family and friends, as you did, serving and loving to the end. Amen.

SANTA CENA

LUCAS 22:14-20

Jesús en la fiesta de la Pascua celebra junto a sus discípulos la fiesta de la comida alrededor de la mesa. Su angustia por todo lo que tenía que pasar no empañó lo sagrado de este momento. Mi abuela siempre dice que comer es un arte y en realidad ella disfruta viéndonos degustar sus manjares. La mayoría de las personas comen apresuradas, casi sin degustar los alimentos. Dios es quién nos prepara el banquete cada día y así sea un pedazo de pan, debemos darle a este momento la sacralidad que lleva, más aún si compartimos con nuestros seres queridos. 

Orar para agradecer por los alimentos, degustar cada bocado con corazón agradecido, escuchar las historias alrededor de la mesa, hacer que cada persona a nuestro lado se sienta bien compartiendo este momento junto a nosotros, servir la comida, el agua, acciones como ésta hacen de cada comida una santa cena. Hoy cuando celebramos la última cena, debemos recordar que los problemas de cada día no nos pueden hacer olvidar que Dios nos prepara un banquete cada día, disfrutémoslo junto a nuestra familia y degustemos cada bocado con corazones agradecidos, con manos y gestos de amor hacia quienes comparten con nosotros el camino de la vida abundante que Jesús nos mostró.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a celebrar la vida junto a nuestros familiares y amigos, así como tú lo hiciste, sirviendo y amando hasta  el fin. Amén.

CHRIST, THE WAY

PHILIPPIANS 3:7-11

“I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death…”

Philippians 3:10

If we were to take the image of a path to illustrate the life of Jesus, we could say that it was a difficult and beautiful pathway, with stones that tried to detain his steps, but also with space for celebrating life. It was a path with time to teach and to share divine wisdom, the wisdom of daily life, but it was also a path with time for healing; a path that was at times widened in order to welcome outcasts and on other occasions it became narrower to the point where there was no exit.

We have all passed through moments of crisis, through paths that have become narrower and upon advancing forward, the option to turn back becomes more difficult.  It seems that each time there are fewer options and that one has reached a dead-end. But remember that Jesus found himself at an apparent dead-end: the cross.  It is here that he shows us his eternal love. This is where our lives take a new path and where everything begins anew.

Prayer: God, help us to seek you and to acknowledge you in our moments of crisis on the pathway of faith. We pray today for the children who are enslaved; protect them in the name of him who gave his life that we may be born again. Amen.

CRISTO, EL CAMINO

FILIPENSES 3:7-11

“Lo que quiero es conocer a Cristo, sentir en mí el poder de su resurrección, tomar parte en sus sufrimientos”

Filipenses 3:10

Si tomáramos la imagen del camino para ilustrar la vida de Jesús, pudiéramos decir que fue un camino difícil y hermoso, con piedras que intentaron detener el paso, pero también con espacio para celebrar la vida. Fue un camino con tiempo para enseñar y compartir la sabiduría divina, la sabiduría de la vida cotidiana, pero fue también un camino con tiempo para sanar; un camino que por momentos se ensanchaba para acoger a los marginados y en otras ocasiones se hacía cada vez más pequeño hasta llegar a un punto donde al parecer no había salida. 

Todos hemos pasado por momentos de crisis, caminos que se hacen cada vez más estrechos y al avanzar, la opción de regresar se hace más difícil. Parece que cada vez quedaran menos opciones y que has llegado a un punto sin salida. Pero recuerda que Jesús se encontró aparentemente en un punto sin salida: la cruz. Es aquí donde nos muestra su amor eterno. Es aquí donde nuestras vidas toman un nuevo camino y donde todo vuelve a comenzar.

Oración: Dios, ayúdanos a buscarte y reconocerte en nuestros momentos de crisis en el camino de la fe. Hoy te pedimos por los niños esclavizados, protégelos en el nombre de aquel que dio su vida para que nosotros podamos nacer de nuevo. Amén.
