THE POWER OF RUMORS

PROVERBS 8: 8-13

Today’s text points out to us that we should abhor the perverse mouth. Those wise texts invite us to honor the Lord by pronouncing words of blessing. When we fill our lives with lies, rumors, haughty or profane words, we are that perverse mouth that is questioned in Proverbs. Especially rumors, including when they are based on the truth, have the power of destroying lives. The Bible is very specific in its instructions in dealing with others. In I Corinthians 13 a very high standard is established, with the mandate of being gracious, patient, humble and generous. Rumors go against every one of these attitudes.

Rumors can also destroy our Christian witness. How can we use perverse language and still maintain that we have the love of Christ within us? More important: how can we affirm that we love others when we destroy them with our tongues?

If we ask God to help us recognize our offenses, including rumors, he will help us to learn to love others as he loves us, and later we can demonstrate that love in our form of speaking.

Prayer: Today I commit myself before you, Lord, to fight against rumors, and not to become a part of that destructive chain. Amen.

...y la boca perversa, aborrezco…

Proverbios 8:13

El texto de hoy nos señala que debemos aborrecer la boca perversa. Estos textos sabios nos invitan a honrar al Señor pronunciando palabras de bendición. Cuando llenamos nuestra vida de mentiras, chismes, palabras altaneras o soeces, somos esa boca perversa que es cuestionada en los proverbios. Especialmente los chismes, incluso cuando se basan en la verdad, tienen el poder de destruir vidas. La Biblia es muy específica en sus instrucciones para el trato con los demás. En 1 Corintios 13 se establece una norma muy elevada con el mandato de ser bondadosos, pacientes, humildes y generosos. Los chismes van en contra de cada una de estas actitudes.

Los chismes pueden destruir también nuestro testimonio cristiano. ¿Cómo podemos usar lenguaje perverso y aun así decir que tenemos el amor de Cristo en nosotros? Más importante ¿Cómo podemos afirmar que amamos a los demás, mientras los destruimos con nuestra lengua?

Si le pedimos a Dios que nos ayude a reconocer nuestras ofensas, incluyendo los chismes, Él nos ayudará a aprender a amar a los demás como Él nos ama, y luego podremos demostrar ese amor en nuestra forma de hablar.

Oración: Me comprometo hoy Señor, delante de ti, a luchar en contra de los chismes, a no formar parte en esa cadena destructiva. Amén.
