THE DIFFERENCE DWELLS IN THE HEART

2 KINGS 22:8-20

Therefore, I will gather you to your ancestors,

and you will be buried in peace.

Your eyes will not see all the disaster

One of the most common errors of the Christian community is to identify spiritual growth with the accomplishment of religious activities, such as attending church, reading the Bible, and praying. We suppose that we’re good Christians if we participate in the correct activities. We have confused the means with the end. If those activities help us to be Christ-like, they become the means for our spiritual growth.

The story of King Josiah illustrates this well. Josiah was not fulfilling the law, neither had he heard the law. Nevertheless, as soon as the book of the law was found and read to him, he humbled himself and repented. God rewarded his righteous heart, although he had still not performed the correct activity.

The correct activity flows from the heart. We can attend services and see it as a routine activity or as a rich experience full of communion and service. We can consider our reading of the Scriptures as a senseless routine or as an encounter with transforming truths. We can pray with hollow words or with expressions of our inability, recognizing our dependency on God. In each case, the difference dwells in the heart.

Prayer: Lord, help me to be more like Josiah, desiring an upright heart. Help me to cultivate a humble and repentant heart and to grow spiritually. Amen.

LA DIFERENCIA RADICA EN EL CORAZÓN

2 REYES 22:8-20

Porque tanto, he aquí yo te recogeré con tus padres,

y serás llevado a tu sepulcro en paz, y no verán tus ojos

todo el mal que yo traigo sobre este lugar.

Uno de los errores más comunes de la comunidad cristiana es identificar el crecimiento espiritual con la realización de actividades religiosas, tales como asistir a la iglesia, leer la Biblia y orar. Suponemos que, si participamos de las actividades correctas, somos buenos cristianos. Hemos confundido los medios con el fin. Si estas actividades nos ayudan a ser semejantes a Cristo, se convierten en el medio para nuestro crecimiento espiritual.

La historia del rey Josías lo ilustra bien. Josías no estaba cumpliendo la ley, ni siquiera había oído la ley. Sin embargo, tan pronto como se descubrió y se leyó el libro de la ley se humilló y se arrepintió. Dios recompensó su corazón recto, aunque todavía no se había complementado con la actividad correcta.

La actividad correcta fluye del corazón. Podemos asistir a los cultos y verlo como una actividad de rutina o como una experiencia rica llena de comunión y servicio. Podemos considerar nuestra lectura de las Escrituras como una rutina sin sentido o como un encuentro con la verdad transformadora. Podemos orar con palabras huecas o con expresiones de nuestra incapacidad reconociendo nuestra dependencia de Dios. En cada caso, la diferencia radica en el corazón.

Oración: Te pido Señor, que me ayudes a ser más semejante a Josías, deseando un corazón recto. Ayúdame a cultivar un corazón humilde y arrepentido y a crecer espiritualmente. Amén.
