GOOD GIFTS

MATTHEW 7:9-11

If you, then, though you are evil,

know how to give good gifts to your children,

how much more will your Father in heaven

give good gifts to those who ask him!  (NIV)

Caring for our children is a parental instinct that comes from God. Even the parents who seem to have little patience are accustomed to try to provide the basics. That said, although parents may not fulfill all the expectations, God always will.

God loves us and delights in caring for us. When our own children are tired, hungry, or suffer, we don’t want them running to a stranger in search of comfort. We want them to come to us, so that they snuggle in our arms, and that they trust that we care about them.

In this sense God is no different. Nevertheless, sometimes our children ask us for things that we know could harm them. Perhaps, like a two-year-old who becomes fascinated by a sharp knife that he sees us using in the kitchen, and although he throws the greatest tantrum of the century, we will not give it to him. Even so, he will not understand that we are not giving it to him because we love him.

We also allow ourselves to be distracted and enamored by shiny things. We frequently see something that seems enthralling, and we want it. And when God doesn’t give it to us we are frustrated, but we can always trust in the divine heart. We can know that when he withholds things that we believe will bring us happiness, he does it for love and for our own good.

Prayer:  God of life, thank you for supplying all my necessities and many of my desires. May I accept your will even though I may not understand it. Amen.

MATEO 7 :9-11

Pero si ustedes, aun siendo malos, saben dar cosas buenas

a sus hijos, ¡Cuánto más su Padre que está en el cielo

Cuidar de nuestros hijos es un instinto maternal que viene de Dios. Hasta los padres que parecen tener poca paciencia suelen intentar proveer lo básico. Con todo, aunque los padres no cumplan todas las expectativas, Dios siempre lo hará.

Dios nos ama y se deleita cuidando de nosotros. Cuando nuestros propios hijos están cansados, hambrientos o sufren, no queremos que corran a un extraño a buscar consuelo. Queremos que vengan a nosotros, que se acurruquen en nuestros brazos y que confíen en que nosotros nos preocupamos por ellos. En ese sentido, Dios no es diferente.

No obstante, algunas veces nuestros hijos nos piden cosas que sabemos podrían perjudicarles. Puede que un niño de dos años quede fascinado por un afilado cuchillo que nos vea usándolo en la cocina; y aunque monte la mayor perreta del siglo no se lo daremos. Aun así, no entenderá que no se lo damos por amor a él.

Nosotros también nos dejamos distraer y enamorar por cosas brillantes. Con frecuencia vemos algo que parece apasionante y lo queremos. Nos frustramos cuando Dios no nos lo da. Pero siempre podemos confiar en el corazón divino. Podemos saber que cuando Él retiene cosas que nosotros creemos nos aportarán felicidad, lo hace por amor y por nuestro propio bien.

Oración: Dios de la vida, gracias por suplir todas mis necesidades y muchos de mis deseos. Permite que acepte tu voluntad, aunque no la comprenda. Amén.
