LIKE THE AIR THAT YOU BREATHE

PSALM 42:1-5

As the deer pants for the streams of water,

so my soul pants for you, O God.

Psalm 42:1 NIV

A disciple asked his wise teacher:  “Teacher, I want to find God.”

The teacher did not respond.  As it was very hot, he told him to accompany him to take a swim in the river.  When both were already in the water, the teacher grabbed the disciple with force and held his head under the water. 

Lacking air, the young man struggled desperately for a few moments, until finally the teacher let him return to the surface.  Afterwards, he asked him what was it that he had most wanted while he was under the water.

“Air,” responded the disciple.

“And do you want God with the same desperation that you had for air when you were under the water?”  asked the teacher.  “If you want God like this, you will find God.  But if you don’t feel a deep need for God, then reasoning and books will not serve you.  You will not find God, unless you desire it with the same vehemence as the need for the air you breathe.”

As the psalmist says, and as we learn from this story, we recognize the need that we have for God and look for him with boldness.

Prayer: Good God who has given us life, allow us to be able to live recognizing that you are the only one we need.  Amen.

COMO EL AIRE QUE RESPIRAS

SALMO 42:1-5

Como ciervo que brama por las corrientes de agua,

así mi alma clama por ti, mi Dios

Salmo 42:1

Un discípulo pidió a su sabio maestro: —Maestro, quiero encontrar a Dios.

El maestro no respondió. Como hacía mucho calor, le dijo que lo acompañara a darse un baño en el río. Cuando ambos estaban ya dentro del agua, el maestro agarró con fuerza al discípulo y le mantuvo la cabeza debajo del agua.

Al faltarle el aire, el joven se debatió con desespero por unos instantes, hasta que finalmente el maestro lo dejó volver a la superficie. Después le preguntó qué era lo que más había deseado mientras estaba debajo del agua.

—Aire —respondió el discípulo—¿Y deseas a Dios con el mismo desespero con el que deseabas aire cuando estabas bajo el agua? —le preguntó el maestro—Si lo deseas así, lo encontrarás. Pero si no sientes una necesidad apremiante de él, de nada te servirán los razonamientos y los libros. No encontrarás a Dios, a menos que lo desees con tanta vehemencia como el aire que respiras.

Así como lo expresa al salmista y como aprendemos de esta historia, reconozcamos la necesidad que tenemos de Dios y busquémosle con denuedo.

Oración: Dios bueno, tú nos has dado la vida, permite que podamos vivir reconociendo que sólo a ti te necesitamos. Amén.
