DON’T LOOK AT WHAT YOU SEE

I SAMUEL 16:4-13

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height,

For I have rejected him.  The Lord does not look at the things man looks at.  Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

1 Samuel 16:7 NIV

When Samuel was sent by God to choose the successor for King Saul, he looked only at the appearance of the sons of Jesse.  They were tall, husky, handsome young men. Samuel surely thought: “these are magnificent qualities for a king.”  Without fail, after each one passed in front of the prophet, God made him see that he could not only look with human eyes, that he could not place his attention only on outward appearances, but on the inside, on what the mind translates with the heart.  The chosen one was the youngest of the eight sons, barely an adolescent who cared for the sheep, with a poetical heart.

How many times we commit the same error as Samuel!  In our societies we pay a lot of attention to physical appearance, the way the most attractive are given certain jobs, without taking into account their interior qualities.  In the church we don’t escape from this reality--we may feel more comfortable greeting or relating to attractive people, but we judge the people who don’t care about their appearance or we pass by the person who is drunk or smells bad.  We don’t stop to think that maybe they need help that we could offer.  Remember this beautiful and true text of “The Little Prince”:  Things are not seen clearly except with the heart, the essential is invisible to the eyes.

Let us also remember the way Jesus acted, who would never pass idly by one of these marginalized ones.  Let us read the gospels carefully and with the heart, in order to better understand the message that he proclaimed and lived:  Love your neighbor as yourself.

Prayer:  Lord, forgive our insensitivity toward our neighbor.  I want to be an imitator of your goodness.  I want to practice love in action!  Amen.

Pero el Señor le dijo: No te dejes llevar por su apariencia

ni por su estatura, porque éste no es mi elegido.

Yo soy el Señor, y veo más allá de lo que el hombre ve.

El hombre mira lo que está delante de sus ojos,

pero yo miro el corazón

1 Samuel 16:7

Cuando Samuel fue enviado por Dios para escoger sucesor para el rey Saúl, proyectaba su mirada sólo en la apariencia de los hijos de Yesé. Eran muchachos altos, fornidos, de buena apariencia. Samuel seguramente pensaba: “estas son magníficas cualidades para llegar a ser rey”. Sin embargo, después que pasaron todos delante del profeta, Dios le hizo ver que no podía mirar con los ojos humanos, que no podía fijar su atención en las apariencias, sino en el interior, en lo que la mente traduce con el corazón. Y en realidad, el escogido era el más chico de los ocho hijos, apenas un adolescente que apacentaba ovejas, con el corazón vestido de poesía.

¡Cuántas veces cometemos el mismo error de Samuel! En nuestras sociedades cuenta mucho la apariencia física, de manera que los más agraciados son priorizados en determinados empleos, sin tener en cuenta sus cualidades interiores. En la iglesia no escapamos de esta realidad y quizás nos sentimos más cómodos al saludar o relacionarnos con las personas de hermosa apariencia, sin embargo juzgamos a las personas de apariencia descuidada o pasamos de largo ante una persona ebria y maloliente. No nos detenemos a pensar que quizás necesitan la ayuda que nosotros podamos brindar. Recordemos ese hermoso y veraz texto de “El principito”: - No se ve bien, sino con el corazón, lo esencial es invisible a los ojos.

Recordemos también cómo actuaría Jesús, quién nunca pasaría indolente ante uno de estos marginados Leamos detenidamente y con el corazón los evangelios, para entender mejor el mensaje que Él proclamó y vivió: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo.

Oración: Señor, perdona nuestra insensibilidad ante nuestro prójimo. ¡Quiero ser imitadora de tus bondades! ¡Quiero practicar el amor en acción!
