GOD LOVES A CHEERFUL GIVER

2 CORINTHIANS 9:6-9

Each of you must give as you have made up your mind,

not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

2 Corinthians 9:7 (NRSV)

When someone does or gives something in order to receive something in exchange, the act is worthless. I have seen and heard of people who are considered foolish because of their generosity. Our society often teaches that you must compete and be a winner, that you must concentrate on your own profits and take every advantage in relationships with others. In this way, values we learn in the gospel, such as service to others, altruism, and humility, are discarded.

Today’s passage shows us the joy of giving and sharing, not out of necessity but only for the pure desire of surrendering to others, just as Jesus gave himself to his people. People I have known who are like that are always happy because it is true that it is better to give than to receive.

Brothers and sisters, all that we have is a gift from the Lord; then let us help each other with fraternal charity, not expecting to receive any reimbursement.

Let’s do this with simplicity, and our hearts will always be happy.

Prayer: God, take away from me those things which can make me self-centered, and let me serve whoever needs me, knowing that in doing so I serve you. Amen.

DIOS AMA AL DADOR ALEGRE

2 CORINTIOS 9:6-9

Cada uno dé como propuso en su corazón, no con tristeza,

ni por necesidad, porque Dios ama al dador alegre.

2 Corintios 9:7

Cuando uno hace algo o da algo para recibir algo a cambio, no vale lo hecho. Yo he visto y he oído de personas que por ser dadivosas se les considera tontas. Nuestra sociedad muchas veces enseña que hay que competir y siempre ser ganador, que hay que concentrarse en las ganancias propias y en sacar ventaja en la relación con los demás. De esta manera, son desechados valores aprendidos en el evangelio como el servicio al prójimo, el altruismo, la humildad.

El texto de hoy nos muestra la alegría de dar y compartir, no por obligación sino por el puro deseo de entregarse a los demás, así como Jesús se entregó a su pueblo. Las personas que yo he conocido que son así, siempre están contentas, porque es verdad que es mejor dar que recibir.

Hermanos y hermanas, todo lo que tenemos nos lo da el Señor, entonces ayudémonos unos a otros con caridad fraternal, no esperando recibir pago alguno.

Hagamos esto con sencillez y nuestro corazón estará siempre alegre.

Oración: Dios, quita de mí todas las cosas que puedan hacerme egoísta y permite que pueda servir a quien me necesita, sabiendo que así te sirvo a ti. Amén.
