SHARED ASSIGNMENTS

2 THESSALONIANS  3: 7-9

Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ

to settle down and earn the food they eat. (NIV)

          2 Thessalonians 3: 12 

When I speak and write about work, my father always comes to mind, an introspective farmer who seems to have been born to work and share the fruits of his labor. In difficult times, when there wasn’t enough means to subsist, he shared corn, food and beans with the neighbors, knowing that these were possibly the only foods they’d have to eat. Strange, that time of camaraderie, when the problems of some were the problems of all.

In this letter Paul refers to the difficulties related to those who didn’t join in the work in orderly fashion and urged everyone to earn their own bread. I wonder, will there be some in our communities who, as this letter says, do not work at anything, but instead interfere in other people’s lives?

When God created man, he placed him in a garden so that he worked and enjoyed the proceeds.  Today we have our garden as well, with the working conditions germane to our times. In the church we are a community of shared work, using the gifts that we have. God calls us to shared work, to further the project of love and service so that the Kingdom is made a reality among us.   

Prayer: Lord, help us to work with good will and humility, in and for our church. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

EL TRABAJO COMPARTIDO

2 TESALONICENSES  3: 7-9

  todos mandamos y exhortamos  por nuestro Señor Jesucristo que trabajando coman su propio pan.    

          2 Tesalonicenses 3: 12 

Siempre que hablo o escribo sobre el trabajo, me viene a la mente mi padre: un campesino callado, que parecía haber nacido para trabajar y compartir el fruto de su trabajo. En tiempos difíciles, cuando no había suficiente para subsistir, compartía con los vecinos maíz, viandas y frijoles, sabiendo que posiblemente ese sería el único alimento que tendrían para comer. Extraño aquel tiempo de camaradería, cuando los problemas de unos eran problemas de todos.

En esta carta Pablo se refiere a las dificultades relacionadas con los que no se incorporaban ordenadamente al trabajo y exhortaba a todos a ganarse su propio pan. Me pregunto: ¿Acaso habrá en nuestras comunidades algunos que, como dice esta carta, no trabajan en nada, sino que se entrometen en lo ajen”?

Cuando Dios creó al hombre lo colocó en un huerto para que lo labrara y disfrutara del producto. Hoy tenemos también nuestro huerto, con las condiciones propias de nuestro tiempo para trabajar. En la iglesia, somos una comunidad para compartir el trabajo usando los dones que tenemos. Dios nos llama al trabajo compartido para llevar adelante el proyecto de amor y servicio para que se haga realidad el Reino entre nosotros.

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a trabajar con voluntad y humildad en y por nuestra Iglesia. Por Jesús. Amén.
