OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL PEOPLE

LUKE  19: 1-10

What lessons can we learn from Zacchaeus’ story? He was a despised tax collector, a servant of Roman power who had enriched himself by extorting the people of Israel.  

What feelings motivated Zacchaeus to run and climb a tree in order to see Jesus? It’s hard to know. However, in the attitude he assumes in this story we discover actions that surprise us.

First, he, chief of the publicans, climbs a tree at the risk of being considered ridiculous. Second, when Jesus tells him of his visit, he shows great joy. His third action shows a radical change. He surrenders part of the riches in far greater quantity than the law stipulates, thus showing real repentance and his decision to make amends for the damage he’d done. Why did this happen? He had met the Son of God and shared his table with him despite “everyone’s” murmurings.   

What teaching does this story offer us? Zacchaeus’ attitude shows that even those whom we consider grave sinners can repent, that true repentance is shown with good works. But we find other characters, those who murmur, criticize and exclude, who don’t have trust in the power of love. We should take care not to do something similar. Jesus didn’t permit himself to be led by prejudices. We should bring the message to everyone and share with everyone without exception.  

Prayer: Lord, guide us in our actions, help us to look at everyone with love and avoid prejudices and murmurings. May we try to follow Jesus’ own sensibility. Amen.

 ¿Qué lecciones podemos aprender del relato de Zaqueo? Era un despreciado cobrador de impuestos, servidor del poder romano, que se había enriquecido extorsionando al pueblo de Israel.

¿Qué sentimiento movió a Zaqueo para correr y subirse a un árbol con el fin de conocer a Jesús?  Difícil saberlo. Sin embargo, en la actitud que asume en este relato, descubrimos acciones que nos sorprenden. Primero, él, jefe de los publicanos, se sube a un árbol, a riesgo de ser considerado ridículo. Segundo, cuando Jesús le anuncia su visita muestra una gran alegría. Su tercera acción muestra un cambio radical. Se desprende de parte de la riqueza en mucha mayor cantidad de lo que la ley estipulaba. Muestra así un arrepentimiento real y su decisión de enmendar el daño que ha producido. ¿Por qué ha sucedido esto? Se ha encontrado con el Hijo de Dios, y compartió la mesa con él, a pesar de las murmuraciones de “todos”.

¿Qué enseñanza nos brinda esta historia? La actitud de Zaqueo muestra, que aun los que consideramos más pecadores, tienen la oportunidad de arrepentirse, que el arrepentimiento verdadero se muestra con buenas obras. Pero descubrimos a otros personajes: los que murmuran, critican y excluyen, que no confían en el poder del amor. Debemos cuidarnos de hacer algo semejante.

Jesús no se dejó llevar por los prejuicios. Debemos llevar el mensaje a todos y compartir con todos sin excepción.

Oración: Señor, guíanos en nuestro actuar, ayúdanos a mirar con amor a todos y evitar prejuicios y murmuraciones. Permite que tratemos de seguir a Jesús en su mismo sentir. Amén.
