WHOM SHOULD WE REVERE?

 JOSHUA 24:13-14

Now therefore revere the Lord, and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness

Joshua 24:14a (NRSV)

            In the 1960 Reina-Valera Version of Scripture, instead of revere the Lord it reads fear the Lord. In the biblical sense of the word fear it is not so much fear as an attitude of deep respect that includes worship, love, service, and obedience. Thus, the fear to which we are urged in the verse which guides our meditation is something fundamental in our relationship not only with God but also with our neighbors and ourselves. When we show respect for the creatures created by God, we show respect for God, even when actions or events related to those around us bother us, with which we aren’t in agreement, or which displease us.

            Respect in the context of this verse means not expressing our disagreement in aggressive or disagreeable words or acts. It is trying to understand other points of view, other qualities, other modes of being and acting. Respect for God means trusting God, accepting God’s will, letting it be active in our lives, holding fast to the assurance that God loves and protects us. Moreover, service and loyalty are asked of us, active collaboration in making God’s Kingdom a reality. We are God’s eyes, ears, hands, in short, God’s instruments.

Prayer: Good and gracious God, teach us to live with respect for and loyalty to you. Increase in us the spirit of service to you and to our neighbor. Give us perseverance in fulfilling your will in the work of your Kingdom in this world. Amen.

¿A QUIÉN DEBEMOS RESPETAR?

 JOSUÉ 24:13-14

Por todo esto, respeten al Señor

y sírvanle con sinceridad y lealtad

Josué 24: 14a

En la Versión Reina-Valera 1960, en lugar de respeten, se lee temed a Jehová. El temor al Señor, en el sentido bíblico, no es miedo sino una actitud de profundo respeto, que incluye la adoración, el amor, el servicio y la obediencia. Luego, el respeto a que se nos insta en el versículo que guía nuestra meditación es algo fundamental en la relación, no sólo con Dios, sino también con nuestro prójimo y con nosotros mismos. Cuando respetamos a las criaturas creadas por Dios, lo estamos respetando a Él, aun cuando hay acciones, sucesos relacionados con los demás que nos molestan, con los que no estamos de acuerdo, o que nos desagradan.

Respeto en el sentido de este verso, significa no expresar nuestro desacuerdo en palabras o acciones agresivas o desagradables. Es tratar de comprender otros puntos de vista, otras cualidades, otros modos de ser y de actuar.  Respetar a Dios significa confiar en Él, aceptar su voluntad, dejar que actúe en nuestras vidas, teniendo la seguridad de que nos ama y nos protege. También se nos pide servicio y lealtad, es decir, la colaboración activa para hacer realidad el Reino de Dios. Somos sus ojos, oídos, manos, en fin, sus instrumentos.

Oración: Dios bueno, enséñanos a vivir en respeto y lealtad a ti. Haz crecer en nosotros el espíritu de servicio a ti y a nuestro prójimo. Danos constancia en cumplir tu voluntad y en la obra de tu Reino en este mundo. Amén.
