YOU DON’T EDUCATE WHEN…

LUKE 2:41-52

His mother cherished every word in her heart.

Education is a noble but difficult act, and thus at times we feel dissatisfied with our children.  I am sure that Mary and Joseph were exemplary parents, but they reclaimed Jesus with fear and anxiety after not knowing about him for three days.  If you are going through similar times, I leave you with these lines of exhortation about education:

You don’t educate when…

…you impose your convictions rather than raising personal convictions. 

…you impose behaviors, rather than proposing values that motivate. 

…you impose pathways, rather than teaching another to walk. 

…you impose submission rather than awakening the courage to be free. 

…you impose your ideas rather than fomenting the capacity to think for oneself.

…you impose the terror that isolates rather than opening up the love that draws near and communicates.  …you impose your authority rather than cultivating the autonomy of the other. 

…you impose uniformity rather than respecting the originality that differentiates. 

…you impose the truth rather than teaching to search for it honestly.

…you impose punishment rather than helping to accept a sanction.

…you impose respect rather than gaining it with your authority as a respectable person. 

…you impose fear that paralyzes rather than seeking for admiration that stimulates. 

…you impose information to memorize rather than showing the meaning of life.

…you impose God rather than presenting God in your life. 

Prayer:  Today we pray, Father, for those people who find themselves in a desperate situation and don’t know what to do.  Let them feel your presence in the midst of the storm.  Amen.

La educación es un acto noble pero difícil, y así a veces nos sentimos insatisfechos con nuestros hijos. Estoy segura de que María y José fueron una madre y un padre ejemplares, pero le reclaman a Jesús entre el miedo y la ansiedad por no saber de Él en tres días. Si usted está pasando por momentos similares, les dejo con estas frases de exhortación sobre la educación.

No educas...

Cuando impones tus convicciones, sino cuando suscitas convicciones personales. Cuando impones conductas, sino cuando propones valores que motivan. Cuando impones caminos, sino cuando enseñas a caminar. Cuando impones el sometimiento, sino cuando despiertas el coraje de ser libres. Cuando impones tus ideas, sino cuando fomentas la capacidad de pensar por cuenta propia. Cuando impones el terror que aísla, sino cuando liberas el amor que acerca y comunica. Cuando impones tu autoridad, sino cuando cultivas la autonomía del otro. Cuando impones la uniformidad, sino cuando respetas la originalidad que diferencia. Cuando impones la verdad, sino cuando enseñas a buscarla honestamente. Cuando impones un castigo, sino cuando ayudas a aceptar una sanción.  Cuando impones disciplina, sino cuando formas personas responsables. Cuando impones autoritariamente el respeto, sino cuando lo ganas con tu autoridad de persona respetable. Cuando impones el miedo que paraliza, sino cuando logras la admiración que estimula. Cuando impones información a la memoria, sino cuando muestras el sentido de la vida. Cuando impones a Dios, sino cuando lo haces presente con tu vida.

Oración: Hoy te pedimos Padre, por aquellas personas que se encuentran en una situación desesperada y no saben qué hacer. Hazle sentir tu presencia en medio de la tormenta. Amén.
