WATER WILL COME OUT OF THE ROCK

Exodus 17:1-7

Strike the rock, and water will come out of it, so that the people may drink.

Exodus 17:6 (NRSV)

            This incident occurs during the exodus of the people of Israel from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. The Sinai Desert by which they approached this valley is very sterile and has little or no water, and just a few stunted bushes. The lack of water produced a great suffering among the Israelites, and so their behavior on this new occasion was unrestrained; it was the equivalent of “testing God.” Moses cried out to God, and his language instead of showing signs of resentment or vindictive imprecation against the people who had given him cruel and undeserved treatment, was the expression of an eager desire to know what was the best thing to do in such circumstances. God told him not to strike the rebels, but the rock, not to draw a stream of blood from the offenders’ chest, but a stream of water from the granite rock. From the struck rock a pure and refreshing stream of water was immediately launched, which was the greatest miracle worked by Moses.

 

 

Prayer: God of life, on our journey towards our liberation, help us to have faith in you. Thank you for your provisions, particularly for the living water which you offer us in the midst of our deserts. We ask all of this in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, the “water of life.” Amen.

DE LA ROCA BROTARÁ AGUA

Éxodo 17:1-7

Aséstale un golpe a la roca, y de ella brotará agua para que beba el pueblo.

Éxodo 17:6

            Este incidente ocurre durante la salida del pueblo de Israel de la servidumbre en Egipto hacia la tierra prometida. El desierto de Sin por el cual se acercaron a este valle, es muy estéril,  contiene poca agua o ninguna, y apenas algún arbusto raquítico. La falta de agua produjo un gran sufrimiento para los israelitas, por lo que su conducta en esta nueva ocasión fue desenfrenada; era equivalente a “tentar a Dios”. Moisés clama al Señor y su lenguaje, en vez de mostrar señales de resentimiento o imprecación vengativa contra el pueblo que le había dado un tratamiento cruel e inmerecido, fue la expresión de un deseo ansioso de saber qué era lo mejor que se podrí¡a hacer en tales circunstancias. Dios le dijo no que hiriese a los rebeldes, sino a la peña; no que sacara una corriente de sangre del pecho de los ofensores, sino una corriente de agua del peñasco de granito. Y de la peña herida inmediatamente se lanzó una corriente de agua pura y refrescante, el cual fue el milagro más grande obrado por Moisés.

 

Oración: Dios de la vida, en nuestro camino hacia nuestra liberación, ayúdanos a confiar en ti . Gracias por tus provisiones, particularmente por el agua viva que nos ofreces en medio de nuestros desiertos. Todo esto te lo pedimos en el nombre de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, el “agua de vida", amén.”
