THE REFORMATION IS NOT OVER

Isaiah 6:1-13

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” And I said, “Here am I; send me!”

            On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther placed on the door of the Wittenberg Abbey his 95 Theses against the corruption of the Church of that time. This action would be the awakening of the Protestant Reformation movement, which had as a seal a call to the authority of Scripture as the only rule for the Christian faith and life, and to defend justification by faith, not works, much less to “buy” salvation by means of indulgences. The emphasis was on the interpretation of the Scriptures and their knowledge, so that the believer could approach God not from fear but from a proper understanding of the biblical God. And so it was that the Bible began to be translated in every nation.

            Unfortunately today many continue to manipulate the knowledge of the Word, and “evangelize” from fear. This is a day to remember that, as Reformed believers, we owe ourselves to a God who is not static, a powerful God who continues calling us to exercise a profetic ministry in these times.

LA REFORMA NO SE TERMINA

Después oí la voz del Señor, que decía: ¿A quién enviaré...? Entonces respondí yo: Heme aquí, envíame a mí.

            El 31 de Octubre de 1517 Martín Lutero coloca en la puerta de la abadía de Wittenberg, en Alemania, sus 95 tesis en contra de la corrupción de la Iglesia de aquella época. Esta acción sería el despertar del movimiento de la Reforma Protestante, que tuvo como sello una llamada a la autoridad de las Escrituras como regla única para la fe y la vida cristiana, y a defender la justificación solo por la fe, no en base a obras,  mucho menos por “comprar” la salvación mediante las indulgencias. El énfasis estaba en la interpretación de las Escrituras y su conocimiento, de modo que el creyente pudiera acercarse a Dios no desde el temor sino desde una adecuada comprensión del Dios bíblico, y por ello la Biblia comenzó a ser traducida en cada nación.

            Lamentablemente hoy muchos que siguen manipulando el conocimiento de la Palabra, y “evangelizan” desde el temor. Este es un día para recordar que como reformados nos debemos a un Dios que no es estático, un Dios poderoso que nos sigue llamando para ejercer un ministerio profético en estos tiempos.
