WHO IS YOUR FRIEND?

John 15:13-17

No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

John 15: 13 (NRSV)

            During the time I was working as an English teacher in a Christian community center, at the beginning of one of the courses, which included a primary interview to promote highly motivating topics in the students for their final presentation, one of the students said that her passion was Harry Potter. She said that she owned the whole collection of books, films, posters and related artifacts, so I allowed her to deliver many presentations on this famous work. For her final examination, I asked her to talk about the human part of it. Finally, after scratching her head, she said, “Friendship.”

            Many literary works of worldwide impact, and made into movies, such as The Lord of the Rings, reflect attitudes toward friends for whom one must risk everything, including life itself. Is success due to this command of Jesus? There is a song with the title, “What Are Friends For?” where the key is “in good times and in bad.” Especially the bad ones. The challenge is when we say, “s/he is my friend” to think of the implications that this affirmation conveys and to make a commitment to solidarity, sister/brotherhood and unconditional accompaniment.

 

Prayer: God, our Eternal Friend, allow your presence in our being through the Holy Spirit to always be prepared to build and rebuild authentic friendships in our lives to your Honor and Glory, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

¿QUIEN ES TU AMIGO?

El amor más grande que uno puede tener es dar su vida por sus amigos

            Durante el tiempo que estuve trabajando como maestro de inglés en un centro comunitario cristiano, al empezar uno de los cursos, que incluía una entrevista primaria para ir potenciando temáticas de alta motivación en los alumnos con vistas a su presentación final, una alumna expresó que su pasión era Harry Potter y que poseía toda la colección de libros, películas, posters y artefactos relacionados, así que le permitíí que focalizara muchas presentaciones sobre esta famosa obra. Para la evaluación final le pedí que hablara de la parte humana de la misma, y después de rascarse la cabeza dijo: La Amistad.

 

            Muchas obras literarias de gran impacto mundial y llevadas al cine, como también lo es El Señor de los Anillos, reflejan actitudes hacia los amigos por los cuales hay que arriesgar incluso la vida. ¿Acaso el éxito se debe a este mandato de Jesús? Hay una canción titulada: ¿Para qué son Los Amigos? (What Are Friends For?) donde la clave es "en los buenos tiempos y en los malos". Sobre todo en los malos. El reto es que cuando digamos “él/ella es mi amigo/a pensemos en las implicaciones que esa afirmación conlleva y hagamos de ello un compromiso de solidaridad, hermandad y acompañamiento incondicional. El dar la vida, va mas allá de lo físico, a lo espiritual y eterno.

 

Oración: Dios, nuestro Eterno Amigo, permite que tu presencia en nuestro ser a través del Espí¡ritu Santo siempre esté dispuesto a construir, y reconstruir, amistades auténticas en nuestras vidas, para Tu Honra y Gloria. Por Jesús. Amén.
