HEADWIND

Matthew 11:16-19

but no one can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse those who are made in the likeness of God.

James 3:8-9 (NRSV)

I know people who spend all their time criticizing everything, all the time. For these people, there isn’t a single person who gets things right; not even the Church escapes their barbs. The same thing happened in the times of Jesus and John the Baptist. People criticized John because he lived like a hermit, despised the good seat at table, and only ate and drank what he found in the desert. “That guy is crazy!” they said. But the same people lashed out at Jesus for the opposite, that is to say because he reputed to be a glutton eating and drinking and surrounding himself with “strange” people with whom no decent person would socialize.

These critics are not lacking in our congregations either, they are the ones who only see the sun’s spots. They judge people and the church according to their own prejudices and defects, and never stop to recognize how, on many occasions, the very thing they criticize today could at a predetermined time bring others closer to God. This was the case with John the Baptist and Jesus, so harshly criticized in their time, yet who contributed so much so that many people could meet God face to face.

Prayer: Lord, give me the strength to accept others as they are and not as I wish they were. Amen.

VIENTO EN CONTRA

Mateo 11:16-19

Santiago 3:8-9
