A POETIC COMMANDMENT?

Matthew 22:34-40

And a second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

            In the 90's a brother invited me to listen to a preacher in a place more than 80 blocks away from the neighborhood, and we decided to walk because urban transportation was undergoing major difficulties. When we arrived, we were able to sit down, and after a few minutes, the church was crowded with people sitting in the windows and on the floor. What stunned those present was when in the sermon, the pastor asked if we were familiar with the Castilian poem that reflected Christ’s commandment to “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Then, he said, “The White Rose” by José Martí.

            In my experience, one of the best lures I have had to bring people to Christ, no matter what church they come to, is what they already know incipiently. It is a way to fish and then go deeper into the Word. The hope is that God will use us to be channels of salvation so that as a “warm up” we can “practice” with friends, with students, with people standing in line. It would be interesting to recognize how others react to something that “even the cat knows.”

            Christians have several challenges; one is to spread, share, open minds and hearts to love each other more; so much the better if we have primary tools to build better people by taking them to The Word.

 

Prayer: Our Father, love generates wisdom; give us that to use in the creation of your earthly reign and fill us with joy in being your instruments, for your Son. Amen .

¿UN MANDAMIENTO EN POESIA?

Y el segundo es semejante a este: Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo

            En los 90´s un hermano me invitó a escuchar un predicador en un lugar distante a más de 80 cuadras del barrio, y nos decidimos a caminar pues el transporte urbano estaba pasando por dificultades mayores. Cuando llegamos pudimos sentarnos y unos minutos después el templo estaba abarrotado y personas sentadas hasta en las ventanas y piso. Lo que dejó estupefactos a los presentes fue cuando en la homilía, el pastor preguntó si conocíamos la poesía en castellano que refleja el mandamiento de Cristo de “Amarás a tu prójimo como a ti mismo” y dijo: La Rosa Blanca, de José Martí.

 

            En mi experiencia una de las mejores carnadas que he tenido para llevar personas a Cristo, sin importar a qué iglesia se acogen ha sido a partir de lo ya incipientemente conocido. Es una manera de pescar y profundizar luego en La Palabra. La esperanza es que Dios nos use para que seamos canales de salvación de manera que como preámbulo podamos “darle taller” con amigos, alumnos, en la cola. Sería interesante reconocer el reaccionar de los demás sobre algo que “hasta el gato sabe”.

 

            Los cristianos tenemos varios retos; uno es divulgar, compartir, abrir mentes y corazones para amarnos más unos a otros, mucho más si tenemos herramientas primarias para construir mejores personas, llevándolas a La Palabra.

 

Oración: Padre Nuestro, el amor genera sabiduría; dánosla para usarla en la construcción de tu reino terrenal y regocijarnos en ser tus instrumentos. Por tu Hijo. Amén.
