MIRACLES ARE BORN IN SMALL THINGS

John 6:1-15

“There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish. But what are they among so many people?”

John 6:9 (NRSV)

The world today needs small gestures—gestures that heal, that offer reasons for hope, that satisfy the body, that awaken sensitivity, that stir the inert.

One of the most beautiful and necessary miracles for this time, when hoarding and fear of scarcity prevail, is the multiplication of the loaves and the fishes. It begins with a child and his humble gesture of sharing what he has. A child shares and becomes a participant in the miracle; it is no coincidence that the word “share” (“compartir”, in Spanish) shares the first syllable with the word “compassion” (com-pasión).

Following the child’s act, moved by compassion, Jesus distributes the five loaves and the two fish, and then the miracle happens: There is enough for the entire crowd!
The act of sharing does not arise from abundance, but from generosity in the midst of smallness.

We always have something to offer. With what seems small, Jesus performs the miracle. On this day, let us learn from this child, let us share (“compartir”) what we have, and let us participate in the miracles of Jesus.

Prayer: Lord, always inspire in me the desire to share. Amen.

EN LO PEQUEÑO NACE EL MILAGRO

Juan 6:1-15

Aquí hay un muchacho que tiene cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados; pero ¿qué es esto para tantos?

El mundo necesita hoy de los gestos pequeños, gestos que sanen, que ofrezcan razones para la esperanza, que sacien los cuerpos, que susciten sensibilidad, que movilicen lo inerte.

Uno de los milagros más hermosos y también necesarios para este tiempo, donde prima el guardar y el miedo a la escasez; es la multiplicación de los panes y los peces. Éste inicia con un pequeño y su gesto humilde de compartir lo que tiene. Un niño comparte y se hace partícipe del milagro, no es casualidad que la palabra com-partir comulgue con la palabra com-pasión en la sílaba primera.  Tras el acto del pequeño, movido por la compasión Jesús reparte los cinco panes y los dos pescados, entonces sucede el milagro: ¡Alcanza para toda una multitud!

El gesto com-partir no nace la abundancia, sino de la generosidad en medio de lo pequeño. Siempre tenemos algo que ofrecer.  Con lo que parece pequeño, Jesús gesta el milagro. En este día aprendamos de este niño, com-partamos lo que tenemos y participemos de los milagros de Jesús.
