LET US THINK OF OTHERS

JOHN 3:1-15

“Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.  For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Luke 6:38

Throughout the twentieth century it was thought that better living conditions would come to those who were happiest and most fraternal. In today’s world we need to admit that material welfare is not enough.

The Bible teaches us that happiness does not consist in chasing after material riches, but rather in living in a good relationship with God and with our neighbors. Those relationships give true meaning to our lives. They are characterized not by what we possess but by what we share and give.

Through being “born again” we enter into a new dimension: that of God’s love.  We have access to it thanks to the most extraordinary gift:  God’s own Son and that Son’s gift of his own life.  That gift has a peculiarity:  it is universal, and yet, it concerns each individual in a very personal manner.  By accepting his wealth and his tenderness, each person can devote himself to God with gratitude.

A true and happy relationship is thereby established with God, who is known not as the One who demands, but as the One who gives and to whom one gives oneself.  In turn, our relationships to others are enriched when they develop along the same principle. Let us seek to discover and satisfy the needs of others without expecting anything in return.

Prayer: Father, give us the wisdom to first do what we need to do first. Amen.

PENSEMOS EN LOS DEMÁS

JUAN  3:1-15

“Dad y se os dará; una medida buena, apretada, remecida,

rebosante pondrán en el halda de vuestros vestidos.

Porque con la medida con que midáis se os medirá.”

A lo largo del siglo XX los seres humanos supusieron que la mejora en las condiciones de vida volvería a la gente más feliz y fraternal. Hoy en día debemos constatar que el bienestar material no basta.

La Biblia nos enseña que la felicidad no consiste en correr tras las riquezas materiales, sino vivir en buena relación con Dios y con nuestros semejantes. Tales relaciones dan su verdadero sentido a la vida. Se caracterizan, no por poseer, sino por compartir y dar. Por medio del “nuevo nacimiento” entramos en una nueva dimensión, la del amor de Dios. Tenemos acceso a ella gracias al más extraordinario don: el que Dios hizo de su propio Hijo y el que el Hijo hizo de su propia vida. Ese don tiene una peculiaridad: es universal y, sin embargo, concierne a cada uno de manera muy personal. Al gustar su riqueza y su dulzura, cada persona puede darse a Dios con agradecimiento. Entonces se establece una verdadera y feliz relación con Dios, conocido,  no como Aquel que exige, sino como el que da y a quien uno se da. A su vez, nuestras relaciones con nuestros semejantes se enriquecen cuando se desarrollan sobre el mismo principio. Busquemos descubrir y satisfacer las necesidades de los demás sin esperar reciprocidad.

Oración: Padre, danos sabiduría para hacer primero lo que debemos hacer primero. Amén.
