GOD AND EVIL

ROMANS 7:21-25

“So I find this law at work: when I want to do good, evil is right there with me.”

Romans 7:21

Many of us have learned that if we have true faith in God, it means that nothing really bad can happen to us.  We have experienced in our own lives the biblical affirmation that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him”. However, be it through a personal tragedy, the sufferings or the untimely deaths of our loved ones, or through the knowledge of unspeakable atrocities; we are at times bombarded by a great feeling of guilt for our “lack of faith”. 

The Christian faith does not say that evil does not occur.  The belief that God is love, and that love is the fundamental power in the universe, does not mean that hate will not win many of the battles. Believing that God’s loving providence guides the process of the world does not mean that events with destructive consequences will not occur. Believing in the resurrection implies first believing in the crucifixion of the person who proclaimed God’s will, as a true injustice.  But this injustice is not the entire story. Even when such an evil occurs, such that it would have been better if it had not occurred, there exists a power working on our behalf that can bring good even out of evil.

Prayer: Father, do not allow us to work together with evil, but help us to act with your holy power. Amen.

DIOS Y EL MAL

ROMANOS 7:21-25

“Así que, queriendo yo hacer el  bien,

hallo esta ley: que el mal está en mí”

Romanos 7:21

Muchos de nosotros aprendimos que si tenemos fe verdadera en Dios, eso significa que nada realmente malo puede ocurrirnos. La afirmación  bíblica de que “en todo Dios obra para bien de los que a él le aman” la hemos experimentado en nuestra propia vida. Sin embargo, bien sea por una tragedia personal, sufrimientos o muertes prematuras de seres queridos, o el conocimiento de atrocidades indecibles; nos asalta un gran sentido de culpa por nuestra “falta de fe” en ocasiones. La fe cristiana no dice que el mal no ocurre. Creer que Dios es amor, y que el amor es el poder fundamental en el universo, no significa que el odio no va a ganar muchas de las batallas. Creer que la amorosa providencia de Dios guía el proceso del mundo no significa  que eventos con consecuencias destructivas no van  a ocurrir. Creer en la resurrección implica antes creer en la crucifixión del proclamador de la voluntad de Dios,  como una verdadera injusticia. Pero esta injusticia no es toda la historia. Aun cuando ocurre este mal, de manera que hubiera sido mejor si no hubiera ocurrido, existe un poder obrando en nuestro medio que puede sacar bien aun del mal.

Oración: Padre, no permitas que obremos con el mal, más bien ayúdanos actuar con tu santo poder. Amén.
