CHRIST, THE COMPANION

MATTHEW 28:16-20

“And surely I am with you always…”

Matthew 28:20

We often experience that great feeling of solitude that leads us to desire friendship with others. At the same time we act afraid of others and are not willing to pay the price of having companionship.  We try in vain to comfort ourselves by means of our own self-pity. We are alone and together.  Knowing that others are also alone, that we share a common solitude, we can unite ourselves to one another. It is possible to love; that miracle that leads us to enter into the solitude of another.

 

 It is often in times of extreme solitude that we learn the deepest truth:  that we are never alone.  Even when we feel the most terrible loneliness, there is someone who will never abandon us. He who is the light, which even the darkness of our privacy cannot extinguish; the life, which even our fears cannot destroy. He who is with us in our solitude is also he who is with the other person. In our isolated solitude we share a common companion.  Christ, our travel companion, never leaves us alone.

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to understand that no one is an island; that another’s pain is my pain. Amen.

 

CRISTO, EL COMPAÑERO

MATEO 28:16-20

“He aquí yo estoy con ustedes siempre…”

Mateo 28:20

Muchas veces experimentamos ese gran sentimiento de soledad que nos lleva a anhelar la amistad con otros. Al mismo tiempo nos mostramos temerosos de los demás y no estamos dispuestos a pagar el precio de tener compañerismo. Tratamos en vano de confortarnos por medio de la lástima que sentimos por nosotros mismos. Estamos solos y juntos. Saber que otros también están solos, que compartimos una común soledad, puede unirnos unos a otros. Es posible el amor, el milagro que nos conduce a entrar en la soledad del otro. A menudo es en la extrema soledad cuando encontramos la verdad más profunda de que nunca estamos solos.  Aún cuando nos sintamos en la más terrible soledad, hay alguien que nunca nos abandonará. Aquel que es la luz, la cual ni las tinieblas de nuestra privacidad pueden extinguir; la palabra, la cual ni nuestra sordera puede callar; la vida, la cual ni nuestros temores pueden destruir. Aquel que está con nosotros en nuestra soledad es también aquel que está con el otro. En nuestra soledad aislada compartimos un común compañero. Cristo, nuestro compañero del camino, nunca nos deja solos.

 

Oración: Señor, ayúdanos a comprender que nadie es una isla, que el dolor de otro es mi dolor. Amén.
