THE MANGER AND THE CROSS

LUKE 2:1-20

“In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world…”

Luke 2:1

It is interesting to read the story of the birth of Jesus when it is not Christmastime. For me, it brings back memories of a recent visit to Israel.  Seeing shepherds on the hills near Bethlehem, visiting the place where Jesus was born, walking through the streets where He walked, being at the temple where He taught, and standing at the place where He was crucified and buried, and later resurrected from among the dead, is an experience which affirms life and confirms faith.

God made the Emperor August order a census to be taken, so that the promised Savior would be born in Bethlehem.  God led Joseph to the little town of Nazareth so that he would meet Mary and as a promise to send a Savior.  The hand of God is also present in our lives when He leads us to faith in Jesus Christ through baptism. God, the creator of the universe, so loved us that He sent His Son to show us a new way to live, a pathway to salvation.  Even today, God is protecting and watching over us in his love, as he did with Mary’s family, Joseph and Jesus.  Let us trust in this!

Prayer: Father, thank you for your love and for the promises that emanate from that love. Strengthen our faith through Jesus Christ and keep us near you always. Amen.

EL PESEBRE Y LA CRUZ

LUCAS 2:1-20

“Por aquel tiempo el emperador Augusto  ordenó

que se hiciera un censo en todo el mundo…”

Lucas 2:1

Es interesante leer la historia del nacimiento de Jesús cuando no es la temporada navideña. A mí me trae recuerdos de una visita que hice recientemente a Israel. Ver a pastores en las colinas cerca de Belén, visitar el lugar donde nació Jesús, andar por las calles que Él anduvo, estar presente en el templo donde Él enseñó, y visitar el lugar donde fue crucificado y sepultado  para luego  resucitar de entre los muertos,  es una experiencia que afirma la vida y confirma la fe. Dios hizo que el emperador Augusto ordenara un censo, para que el Salvador prometido naciera en Belén. Dios llevó a José al pequeño pueblo de Nazaret para que conociera a María y como promesa de enviar un Salvador. La mano de Dios también está presente en nuestras vidas cuando por medio del bautismo, nos lleva a la fe de Jesucristo. Dios, el creador del universo, nos ama tanto que envió a Su Hijo para mostrarnos una nueva forma de vivir, un camino a la salvación. También hoy  Dios nos protege y nos guarde en su amor como lo hizo con la familia de María, José y Jesús. ¡Confiamos en esto!

Oración: Padre, gracias por tu amor y las promesas que emanan de ese amor. Fortalece nuestra fe por medio de  Jesucristo y mantennos siempre cerca de ti. Amén.
