YOU ARE NOT TEACHING WHEN . . .

LUKE 2:41-52

 His mother treasured all these things in her heart.

Education is a noble and difficult deed. At times we feel dissatisfied with the way we teach our children. I’m sure that Mary and Joseph were exemplary as a mother and father chosen by God for Jesus. However, at times we don’t really have any good ideas about how to respond to the foolish behavior of our little ones. Perhaps that is why they complained to Jesus of their fear and anxiety at not finding him for three days. If you are experiencing similar situations, I leave these encouraging words about teaching with you:

                                                           You are not teaching . . .

When you impose your own convictions rather than evoking personal convictions.

When you demand conduct without putting forward motivational values.

When you impose avenues without teaching how to walk.

When you impose submission without awakening the courage to be free.

When you impose your ideas without encouraging the ability to think for oneself.

When you impose fear that isolates rather than when you free up the kind of love which draws people together and connects them.

When you impose your authority without cultivating the other person’s autonomy.

When you demand uniformity without respect for originality which creates differences.

When you demand truth without showing how to search honestly for the truth.

When you impose a punishment without helping one to accept a penalty.

When you impose discipline without creating a responsible person.

When you authoritatively demand respect instead of earning it with the authority of a respectable person.

When you impose fear which paralyzes instead of drawing admiration for encouragement.

When you demand rote memorization instead of demonstrating the meaning of life.

When you impose God without making God present in your life.

 

Prayer: Today we pray, Father, for those people who find themselves in a desperate situation and don’t know what to do. May they find your presence in the midst of the storm.  Amen.

NO EDUCAS CUANDO...

La educación es un acto noble y difícil. A veces nos sentimos insatisfechos por la manera en la que educamos a nuestros hijos. Estoy segura de que María y José fueron una madre y un padre ejemplares escogidos por Dios para Jesús. Sin embargo, en ocasiones, no sabemos muy bien cómo actuar ante las acciones imprudentes de nuestros pequeños. Quizás por eso ellos le reclaman a Jesús, entre el miedo y la ansiedad por no saber de él en tres días. Si usted está pasando por momentos similares, les dejo con estas frases de exhortación sobre la educación.

No educas cuando...

Cuando impones tus convicciones, sino cuando suscitas convicciones personales. Cuando impones conductas, sino cuando propones valores que motivan. Cuando impones caminos, sino cuando enseñas a caminar.  Cuando impones el sometimiento, sino cuando despiertas el coraje de ser libres. Cuando impones tus ideas, sino cuando fomentas la capacidad de pensar por cuenta propia. Cuando impones el terror que aísla, sino cuando liberas el amor que acerca y comunica.  Cuando impones tu autoridad, sino cuando cultivas la autonomía del otro.  Cuando impones la uniformidad, sino cuando respetas la originalidad que diferencia. Cuando impones la verdad, sino cuando enseñas a buscarla honestamente.  Cuando impones un castigo, sino cuando ayudas a aceptar una sanción.  Cuando impones disciplina, sino cuando formas personas responsables. Cuando impones autoritariamente el respeto, sino cuando lo ganas con tu autoridad de persona respetable.

Cuando impones el miedo que paraliza, sino cuando logras la admiración que estimula.  Cuando impones información a la memoria, sino cuando muestras el sentido de la vida. Cuando impones a Dios,

sino cuando lo haces presente con tu vida.

 

Oración: Hoy te pedimos Padre, por aquellas personas que se encuentran en una situación desesperada y no saben qué hacer. Hazle sentir tu presencia en medio de la tormenta. Amén.
