IT’S ABOUT GIVING
WITH JOY . . .
AND RESPONSIBILITY
MALACHI 3:8-12

I have often listened as preachers and leaders of different
Christian communities cite texts like the one just read to generate
contributions from the faithful through tithes, offerings, first fruits . . .
and countless gadgets to raise funds. In the best of instances, those monies
received went into educational, diaconal, and evangelistic works, or other
forms of assistance. But examples still exist of unscrupulous people who use
the Bible to take personal advantage and extort money from humble people.
Something is clear to us in the Holy Scriptures, both in the
Old and New Testaments: God is more pleased with obedience than with
“sacrifices . . . or the fat of rams,” according to the Prophet Samuel’s
denunciation. Moreover, according to Jesus’ testimony, God is more pleased by a
humble offering like that of the widow than the ostentatious sacrifices of the
hypocrites of his time.
Today let’s ponder what we are prepared to sacrifice to God.
Our whole life wouldn’t be enough of a response to God’s immense love for us,
but it would be good for us to serve the needy, to share how much or how little
we have, and to forgive those who have offended us. This is the sacrifice of
praise that God desires from us.
Give of your finances to God’s work joyfully, spontaneously,
and freely, all with a sense of responsibility to God’s work – but never for
the enrichment of others.
Prayer: Good and gracious God, thank you for allowing us to
collaborate with your work through our gifts. Enlighten those who use their
power for extortion and deception, so that they turn back to you. Amen.

Traed todos los diezmos al alfolí…
Malaquías 3:10 a
Muchas veces he
escuchado cómo predicadores y líderes de diferentes comunidades cristianas
citan textos como el antes leído para lograr la contribución de los fieles a
través de diezmos, ofrendas, primicias… y un sinnúmero de artilugios para
recaudar fondos. En el mejor de los casos, tales dineros recaudados se
invierten en labores educativas, diacónicas, evangelizadoras o asistenciales.
Pero no dejan de existir ejemplos en los que personas inescrupulosas se valen
de la Biblia para sacar provecho personal y extorsionar a gente humilde.
Algo nos queda claro en
las Sagradas Escrituras, tanto en el Antiguo como en el Nuevo Testamento: a
Dios le complace más la obediencia que “los sacrificios… o la grosura de los
carneros”, como denuncia el profeta Samuel; y le agrada, según el testimonio de
Jesús, más un sacrificio humilde como la ofrenda de la viuda, que los
ostentosos sacrificios de los hipócritas de su época.
En el día de hoy
meditemos acerca de qué estamos dispuestos a sacrificar a Dios. Nuestra vida
toda no sería suficiente para responder al inmenso amor de Dios hacia nosotros,
pero estaría bien comenzar con servir al necesitado, compartir lo mucho o poco
que tengamos y perdonar a quienes nos ofenden. Es ese el sacrificio de alabanza
que nos demanda Dios.
Contribuya a la obra de
Dios con sus finanzas alegre, espontánea y libremente, con todo sentido de
responsabilidad por la obra de Dios, pero nunca para enriquecer a otros.
Oración: Dios bueno, gracias por poder colaborar con tu
obra a través de mis dones. Ilumina a aquellos que ejercen su poder para
extorsionar y engañar, que retornen a ti, Señor. Amén.
