Beginning of the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

ECUMENICAL LIFE

JOHN 17:14-23

May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

I knew someone who always said, “When I wake up, I ask God for the world to be more ecumenical” and after a few seconds said, “truly ecumenical.”  And it is true that in our reality we should stress the spirit of dialogue, cooperation, understanding, empathy, commitment, critical examination…that drives ecumenism. In the scope of the Church there is still much more to be accomplished in this regard.  Our communities, beyond the denominational differences, should open ourselves to brotherhood and service-- that would be a witness of unity to the world.

In these days when we celebrate the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, we should stop to analyze how much we are doing to break down the barriers that separate us as brothers and sisters in the faith.  How much more fruitful our work would be, if, inspired by the example of Jesus, we are open to everything that encourages us to sow, build, strengthen…even beyond creeds and ideologies. 

Prayer:  God of goodness, may we act with faith in such a way that we can overcome the barriers and stumbling blocks that work against unity.  Amen.

VIDA ECUMÉNICA

JUAN 17:14-23

Conocí a alguien que decía a menudo “al levantarme le pido a Dios que el mundo sea más ecuménico” a lo que agregaba segundos después “verdaderamente ecuménico”. Y es verdad que en nuestra realidad valdría hacer valer el ánimo de diálogo, cooperación, comprensión, empatía, compromiso, mirada crítica… que promueve el ecumenismo. En el ámbito de la Iglesia hay aún mucho que alcanzar en este sentido. Nuestras comunidades, más allá de diferencias denominacionales, deben abrirse a la fraternidad y el servicio, lo que sería un testimonio de unidad al mundo.

En estos días en los que celebramos la Semana de oración por la unidad de los cristianos, debemos detenernos a analizar cuánto estamos haciendo por derrumbar las barreras que nos separan como hermanos en la fe. Mucho mayor debe ser nuestro empeño, inspirados e inspiradas en el ejemplo de Jesús, debemos abrir nuestras miradas a todo aquel o aquella que de buena voluntad se anime a sembrar, construir, fortalecer… más allá de credos e ideologías.

Oración: Dios bueno, que podamos obrar con fe de tal manera que podamos superar las barreras y tropiezos que atentan contra la unidad. Amén.
