OUR HOPES? IN GOD!

… who look for help to Pharaoh’s protection,

to Egypt’s shade for refuge.

In the prophetic discourse of Israel, Egypt represents the temptation to return to slavery in order to survive. Just as happened in an episode of the Exodus, when some recalled the fleshpots of Egypt without remembering the injustice of their slavery, now the prophet confronts those who seek political alliances with those who can dominate and even destroy them.

This text reminds us that certain alliances, although apparently desirable, will bring us nothing but shame and confusion. The prophet’s complaint is failure to appeal to God in the first place. This shows a great lack of the people’s trust in God, who is always “at hand,” because God always cares, guides, and loves.

Today there are many arms open as alternatives to God: consumerism, violence, indifference, forgetting the roots, selfishness… These are the Egypts that surround us and that we must face as challenges to a kingdom that is not of this world but rather built with love, justice, peace, and truth. Building this kingdom with God’s hand, without the help of Egypt, is our challenge.

Prayer: God of the abundant life, give us strength not to give in to the temptations that destroy the legitimacy of your kingdom of love. Amen.

¿Nuestras esperanzas? ¡En Dios!

Isaías 30:1-3

… se dirigen a Egipto para buscar apoyo el poder del Faraón,

y poner su esperanza en la protección de los egipcios.

En el discurso profético de Israel, Egipto representa la tentación de volver a la esclavitud por tal de lograr la supervivencia. Tal y como ocurrió en un episodio del Éxodo, cuando algunos evocaron las ollas de carne y cebolla de Egipto sin recordar la porción de injusticia que implicaba ser esclavos y esclavas, ahora el profeta confronta a quienes pretenden alianzas políticas con quienes pueden también dominarlos y hasta destruirlos.

Este texto nos recuerda que ciertas alianzas, aunque aparentemente sean convenientes, no nos traerán más que vergüenza y confusión. El reclamo que hace el profeta es por no haber apelado a Dios en primer lugar. Eso da cuenta de una falta enorme de confianza del pueblo en Dios, que siempre que se tiene “a la mano” pues Dios siempre cuida, guía y ama.

Hoy muchos imperios nos abren sus brazos como alternativas a Dios: el del consumo, el de la violencia, el de la indiferencia, el del olvido de las raíces, el del egoísmo… son los Egiptos que nos rodean y ante quienes debemos vivir el desafío de un reino que no es de este mundo porque está construido con amor-justicia, paz y verdad. Construir ese reino de la mano de Dios y sin la ayuda de Egipto, es nuestro reto.

Oración: Dios de la vida en abundancia, danos firmeza para no ceder ante las tentaciones que desvirtúan la legitimidad de tu reinado de amor. Amén.
