SUFFERINGS IN LIFE 

PSALM 46

We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed;

perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed;

2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (NRSV)

Some atmospheric conditions create a grave threat to people and properties, such as hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. When we hear of these natural disasters, we ask ourselves, “Why did this happen?” We also question other things such as “Why do I have cancer?” “Why did my child die?” “Why did my marriage fail?”

On January 27 one of the saddest events of recent times occurred in Havana; a very strong tornado destroyed several neighborhoods of the capital causing some deaths and numerous injuries, to say nothing of the widespread loss of both personal and institutional physical possessions. Perhaps we cannot see any good in particular events; nevertheless, we know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28) There are times when what happens to us seems more than we can bear. One sure thing is that God gives us the means to bear our burdens, because they will never be greater than the strength he gives us.

God has not promised us a life free of problems or sorrows, but our faith in God makes it possible for us to bear every situation.

Prayer: Lord God, rescue us from despair, free us from fear, and hold us in your love. Today, we ask especially for people affected in one way or another by natural disaster. We ask for your companionship, your strength and your help for all that we need to do. Help us too, as your people, to be where you need us by offering a helping hand and a word of encouragement. Amen.

SUFRIMIENTOS EN LA VIDA SALMO 46

Aunque llenos de problemas, no estamos sin salida; tenemos preocupaciones, pero no nos desesperamos; nos persiguen, pero no estamos abandonados; nos derriban,

pero no nos destruyen.

2 Corintios 4:8-9

Algunas condiciones atmosféricas causan graves daños a personas y a propiedades. Hay huracanes, tornados e inundaciones. Cuando oímos de estos desastres naturales nos preguntamos: “¿Por qué ocurrió?” Cuestionamos también otras cosas como: “¿Por qué tengo cáncer?” “¿Por qué murió mi hijo?” “¿Por qué fracasó mi matrimonio?”

El pasado 27 de enero en la Habana ocurrió uno de los hechos más tristes en los últimos tiempos: un tornado de gran fuerza destruyó varios municipios de la capital, ocasionando algunos muertos y un buen número de heridos; además de incontables destrucciones en bienes materiales de personas e instituciones del país. Quizás no veamos nada bueno cuando ocurre algo en particular. Sin embargo, Sabemos que Dios dispone todas las cosas para el bien de quienes le aman (Romanos 8:28). Hay momentos cuando lo que nos sucede parece ser mayor de lo que podemos soportar. Una cosa segura es que Dios nos dará la manera de sobrellevar las cargas; pues éstas nunca serán mayores que la fuerza que Él nos da. Dios no nos ha prometido una vida sin problemas y sin dolores. Pero nuestra fe en Dios hace posible que soportemos toda situación.

Oración: Señor Dios, rescátanos de la desesperación, líbranos del temor y mantennos en tu

amor. Hoy te pedimos especialmente por las personas afectadas de una manera u otra por el desastre natural. Te pedimos tu compañía, tu fuerza y tu cuidado sobre todo aquel que lo está necesitando. Ayúdanos también a nosotros, como pueblo tuyo, a estar donde se nos necesita tendiendo una mano de ayuda y una palabra de aliento. Amén.
