TRUE HOLINESS
MICAH 6:6-8
He has shown you, O mortal, what
is good.
And what does the Lord require of
you?
To act justly and to love mercy,
and to walk humbly with your God.

How much of our Christian
life is merely empty and devitalized? How much is faith, powerful, alive, and
abundant? Prayer, the reading of the Word, participation in the sacraments,
attendance at worship services, service in the broader world, and even the
effort to win lives for Christ can either be an act of religion or an action of
faith.
Everything depends on
its origin, its movement and its objective. A prayer made to fill out a
formula, to fulfill a custom is a religious prayer. A prayer raised in search
or communion with God, with the desire to praise him, to discover his will, and
to obey him at any cost is a prayer of faith.
A service that is
offered without loving human beings, but instead as a manner to quiet the
conscience and thank a demanding God is a service of a religious nature. A
service that is offered voluntarily in humility, loving humanity and all
creation, in obedience and in response to Christ’s love is a service and work
of faith.
Christians should be
“non-religious,” simply a human being; neither a penitent nor a saint in the
traditional sense, but rather one who lives in the wider world with all its
duties and problems, its triumphs and failures. But this non-religious
Christian shouldn’t live for himself, but rather accept to suffer with God for
the world and to live before God in obedience and holiness amid the situation
he has been given to live.
Prayer: Lord, help us to live
our lives so that they have a sense of being grounded in our faith. In your
name we pray. Amen.

¿Cuánto
de nuestra vida como cristianos es mera religión vacía y desvitalizada? ¿Cuánto
es fe poderosa, viva y abundante? La oración, la lectura de la Palabra, la
participación en los sacramentos, la asistencia a los cultos de adoración, el
servicio en medio del mundo, aun el esfuerzo por ganar vidas para Cristo pueden
ser u acto de religión o una acción de fe. Todo depende de su origen, de su
movimiento, de su propósito.
Una
oración que se realiza para llenar una fórmula, para cumplir una costumbre, es
una oración religiosa; una oración que se eleva en busca de comunión con Dios
con un deseo de alabarle, descubrir su voluntad y obedecerle a todo riesgo es
una oración de fe. Un servicio que se ofrece sin amar a los seres humanos, más
bien como manera de acallar la conciencia y agradar a un Dios exigente es un
servicio de carácter religioso; un servicio que se ofrece voluntariamente en
humildad y amor a la humanidad y a toda la creación, en obediencia y respuesta al
amor de Cristo, es un servicio y obra de fe.
El
cristiano debe ser un “no religioso”, sencillamente un ser humano; no un
penitente ni un santo de modo tradicional, si no uno que vive en medio del
mundo, con todos sus deberes y problemas, sus triunfos y fracasos. Pero este
cristiano no religioso no debe vivir para sí, sino aceptar sufrir con Dios por
el mundo y vivir frente a Dios en obediencia y santidad, en medio de la
situación que le ha tocado vivir.
Oración:
Señor, ayúdanos a que nuestras vidas tengan un sentido
basado en nuestra fe. En tu nombre oramos, amén.
