TO BUILD: WHAT?

1 THESSALONIANS 5:14-23

So with yourselves; since you are eager for spiritual gifts, strive to excel in them for building up the church.

1 Corinthians 14:12 (NRSV)

For every Christian the urgent hour of building has struck. For many years the watchword of our Presbyterian Church has contained an urgent need: building up the spiritual life of the Church. Fine, let’s honor the great watchword by building up our own lives first. Let’s use our devotion, our talents, and our loyalty to our Lord as the prime material with which to raise the whole edifice.

The Christian life involves a sincere self-evaluation, a deep contrition. Face to face with Jesus, we must be ready to uproot weeds and prepare always for the greening of spiritual laurels. That’s the first step before we can see the horizon where exterior action is the testimony of an inner zeal. It is worth stressing that the Christian life finds its beginning within us, in all that we are and all we can do, so that the larger world may believe in God because it can truly believe in us.

Let’s leave the long view for now and take a short but deep one that listens to the heart, that repairs the weaknesses of the soul in order to find the fissures and strengthen the building for God’s purpose.

Prayer: Lord, underpin our lives by faith through prayer. Help us in the task of building. Amen.

Procurad ser excelentes para edificación de la iglesia

1 Corintios 14:12

Para cada cristiano ha sonado la urgente hora de construir. Hace muchos años el lema de nuestra Iglesia Presbiteriana, recogía una perentoria necesidad: edificar la vida espiritual de la iglesia.

Bien, empecemos la gran consigna edificando, antes que nada, nuestras propias vidas. Hagamos de la devoción, de los talentos y de la lealtad al Maestro, la materia prima para que Él levante todo el edificio.

La vida cristiana implica una introspectiva sincera, una actitud de contrición profunda. Cara a cara con Jesús, dispuesta siempre a arrancar las cizañas y reverdecer, a cada momento, laureles espirituales. Este es el primer paso, después vendrá la mirada horizontal, la acción por fuera: testimonio viviente del fervor íntimo. La vida cristiana, vale la pena insistir, es un comenzar por nosotros mismos en todo lo que somos y en lo que podemos ser para que el mundo lo crea a Él porque en verdad nos cree a nosotros. Dejemos la mirada larga en esta hora quieta de la meditación y proyectemos una corta pero honda que ausculte el corazón, que revise las debilidades del alma para coger las resquebrajaduras del edificio y apuntalarlo bien para la causa divina.

Oración: Señor, apuntala nuestra vida por fe, mediante la oración. Ayúdanos en la tarea de edificar. Amén.
