CHRISTIAN OBEDIENCE

EPHESIANS 5:13-21

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Submit to one another sounds at first like a military or prison order, which is expected to be blindly obeyed. But is this what the Apostle Paul is getting at?  If not, what is he trying to tell us? The first 21 verses of this chapter can be summed up as: imitate God; which can only be done with faith, hope, and encouragement of Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit. Submit to one another may mean: Respect one another in the love of God in Christ Jesus; not mistreating one another, not using one another for our own benefit, not abusing the authority given to us by circumstances.

In the armed forces, the instructors say that the chain of command is an accident; that is, one must serve another and not one’s own self. The Christian is at the service of the Kingdom of God, with eyes focused on God, seeking his will to serve him, not serving his own interests or ego but the greater glory of God. I recall the words of an old popular hymn of the eighth century:

Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;

Naught be all else to me save that thou art;

Thou my best thought, by day or by night;

Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light.

Prayer: God and Our Lord, teach us the dependence we should have on you. Amen.

Sométanse los unos a los otros por reverencia a Cristo

Efesios 5:21

Sométanse  suena, a primera impresión, como una orden de tipo militar o carcelario, en la cual solo se espera obediencia ciega. ¿Pero, es esto a lo que apunta Pablo?  Si no, ¿qué es lo que nos dice con esto? Los primeros 21 versículos de este capítulo pueden resumirse en: imiten a Dios; lo que desde ya sólo se puede pretender con la fe, esperanza y aliento de Cristo Jesús en el poder del Espíritu Santo. El someterse a otros, puede significar: Respétense unos a otros en el amor de Dios en Cristo Jesús; el no maltratarnos, no usarnos para provecho propio, el no abusar de nuestra autoridad conferida por las circunstancias.

En las fuerzas armadas, los instructores dicen que la jerarquía  es un accidente;  es decir, debe estar al servicio de y no para provecho propio. El cristiano está al servicio del Reino de Dios, con la visión puesta en Dios, buscando su voluntad para servirlo,  y no para provecho propio ni para satisfacer el propio ego, sino para la mayor gloria de Dios. Aquí viene a la memoria la letra de un antiguo y popular himno del siglo VIII:

Oh Dios de mi alma, sé tú mi visión

Nada te aparte de mi corazón

Noche y día yo en ti,  y tu presencia

Es luz para mí.

Oración: Dios y Señor nuestro, enséñanos la dependencia que debemos tener de ti. Amén.
