THE DIFFICULT TASK OF FOLLOWING JESUS

Luke 9: 22-25

Them he said to them, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must  deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.”  (NIV)

Following Jesus has never been an easy task. It was not for his first disciples, who faced different political and religious powers. It is not for us today. The understanding of the concept “life with riches” that makes society happy is opposed to the “life in abundance” that Jesus announces.

These are harsh words we read in this text: “taking up our crosses” when we thought following him meant that he would take it from us. “Leaving our own searches and goals,” when we thought that following him would give us free rein to achieve them.

To follow Jesus is also to suffer all the sufferings that human selfishness put him through. It is to accept that there are thorns in the path, because the people who should set an example–even in the churches–sometimes become blinded by power and build walls.

To follow Jesus is to rethink our horizons, not toward the top, but toward the earth. Also toward the people, toward the humble people, and from that humility we give ourselves to others, and learn to love as he did.

 

Prayer: Jesus, give us the wisdom to follow you wholeheartedly, Amen.

LA DIFÍCIL TAREA DE SEGUIR A JESÚS

Lucas 9: 22-25

Luego, dirigiéndose a la multitud, les dijo: “Si alguno quiere acompañarme, que no se busque a sí mismo, que tome su cruz de cada día y me siga.

Seguir a Jesús nunca ha sido una tarea fácil, no lo fue para sus primeros discipulos que se enfrentaron a distintos poderes politicos y religiosos, no lo es para nosotras y nosotros hoy tampoco. La comprensión de que el concepto de “vida con riquezas” que hace feliz a la sociedad, se contrapone a la “vida en abundancia” que anuncia Jesús es un verdadero choque de trenes. Son palabras duras las que leemos en este texto: tomar nuestras cruces, cuando pensábamos que seguirle significaba que nos las quitaria; “dejar nuestras propias búsquedas y metas”, cuando pensábamos que siguiéndole nos daria via libre para alcanzarlas.

Seguir a Jesús es también padecer todos los sufrimientos que el egoismo humano le hizo pasar, es aceptar que hay espinas en el camino porque las personas que deben dar ejemplo, incluso en las Iglesias, a veces se ciegan de poder y levantan muros; seguir a Jesús es replantearnos los horizontes, no hacia la cima sino hacia la tierra, hacia el pueblo, hacia la gente humilde, y desde esa humildad darnos a los demás, y aprender a amar como Él lo hizo.
