A GOD WHO DOES NOT TEMPT, BUT SAVES

James 1: 12-18

James 1:1

Temptations are a difficult topic to discuss, since they are almost always associated with behaviors that we should not follow as God’s people. The first thing we must discern is which temptations really oppose the teachings of Jesus, and which have been imposed upon us, and have a moral or cultural genesis.

In the text, there is an important clue: temptations never come from God, firstly because evil cannot tempt God, and secondly because God himself would not put anyone to that test. This statement demystifies the belief that God gives us tests to grow in life, when in reality, God, in the midst of all the evil and suffering, gives us the strength to overcome our weaknesses and our misfortunes.

God is that creator who created us by his will, and whenever we are aimless, faced with terrible temptations to let go of our faith, to lower our arms, to immobilize ourselves in the face of pain, to doubt his existence, then let us be sure that we have his light to illuminate the path and be able to continue.

 

Prayer: God of forgiveness, help us to take refuge in you whenever the temptation of hopelessness wins. Amen.

UN DIOS QUE NO TIENTA... SALVA

Santiago 1: 12-18

Las tentaciones son un tema difícil de dialogar, pues casi siempre están asociadas a conductas que no deberíamos seguir como pueblo de Dios. Lo primero que debemos discernir, es cuáles tentaciones realmente se oponen a las enseñanzas de Jesús, y cuáles nos han sido impuestas, y tienen una génesis moral o cultural.

En el texto hay una pista importante: nunca las tentaciones vienen de Dios, en primer lugar porque el mal no puede tentar a Dios, y en segundo lugar porque Dios mismo no pondría a nadie a pasar esa prueba. Esta afirmación desmitifica la creencia de que Dios nos pone pruebas para crecer en la vida, cuando en realidad, Dios, en medio de toda la maldad y los sufrimientos, nos da la fuerza para superar nuestras flaquezas y nuestras desgracias. Dios es ese creador que nos engendró por su voluntad, y siempre que estemos sin rumbo, ante las terribles tentaciones de soltar la fe, de bajar los brazos, de inmovilizarnos ante el dolor, de dudar de su existencia, estemos seguros de que contamos con su luz para alumbrar el camino y poder continuar.

 

Oración: Dios del perdón, ayúdanos a refugiarnos en ti siempre que la tentación de la desesperanza no venza. Amén.
