WHAT SHOULD I DO...?

Mark 10:17-27

“No one has greater love than this,

that he lay down his life for his friends.”

John 15:13

If at heart it’s taken sincerely, it’s difficult to remain indifferent to this gospel reading.

No one can doubt the good intentions of that youth who approached Jesus Christ to make him an eternal, (Mark 10:17) a verse to which St. Mark refers us. It’s clear that he is asking, “Good teacher, what should I do to inherit life?” But there was something inside him that needed more. So it’s easy to suppose, like every good Israelite, that he knew very well what the Law prescribed, but there was something worrying him inwardly, a need to search beyond. And so he questions Jesus.

In our Christian life we need to learn to overcome that vision which reduces faith to a mere question of performance. Our faith is much more. It’s an adhesion of the heart to Someone, who is God. When we put our hearts into something, we also put our lives there; and in the case of faith we surpass the conformism that today seems to oppress the existence of so many believers. Whosoever loves, gives.

In reality Jesus’ answer to the youth’s question is an open door to that total giving-in for love. “Go and sell all you have and give it to the poor […], afterwards, come and follow me.” (Mark 10:21) It’s a giving that is a genuine expression of love. So, let’s live out our relationship with God by that rule; may the Lord not only find a sincere heart in us, but also a generous one, one that is open to the demands of love.

Prayer:  Lord, help me to live a true faith, and not one of appearances, and to practice an unconditional love.

¿QUÉ DEBO HACER...?

Marcos 10:17-27

Este es un evangelio ante el cual es difícil permanecer indiferente si se afronta con sinceridad de corazón.

Nadie puede dudar de las buenas intenciones de aquel joven que se acercó a Jesucristo para hacerle una eterna?” (Mc 10,17). Por lo que nos refiere san Marcos, está claro que pregunta: “Maestro bueno: ¿qué debo hacer para heredar la vida en ese corazón había necesidad de algo más, pues es fácil suponer que —como buen israelita— conocía muy bien lo que la Ley decía al respecto, pero en su interior había una inquietud, una necesidad de ir más allá y, por eso, interpela a Jesús.

En nuestra vida cristiana tenemos que aprender a superar esa visión que reduce la fe a una cuestión de mero cumplimiento. Nuestra fe es mucho más. Es una adhesión de corazón a Alguien, que es Dios. Cuando ponemos el corazón en algo, ponemos también la vida y, en el caso de la fe, superamos entonces el conformismo que parece hoy oprimir la existencia de tantos creyentes. Quien ama se da.

En realidad, la respuesta de Jesús a la pregunta del joven es una puerta abierta a esa donación total por amor: “Anda y vende todo lo que tienes, y dáselo a los pobres (…); después de eso, ven y sígueme” (Mc 10,21). Es un darse que es expresión genuina del amor. Vivamos nuestra relación con Dios en esa clave. Que el Señor encuentre en nosotros no sólo un corazón sincero, sino también un corazón generoso y abierto a las exigencias del amor.

Oración: Señor, ayúdame a vivir una fe verdadera y no de apariencias, para practicar un amor incondicional.
