PRAYING WITHOUT CEASING

MARK 11:22-26

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

Marcos 11:24

I once had the opportunity to participate in a worship service at a Korean Church in Buzan. Before the service began our hosts gave us gave us a tour of the different rooms adjacent to the church sanctuary.  I remember that there was a cozy little room and when I asked what they did in that space, they replied:  This is where a small prayer group gathers, while the worship service is going on. They pray for everything to go well: the choir songs, the pastor’s sermon, and for various moments throughout the liturgy. I was amazed! We almost always use prayer for pleading with God on behalf of the sick and needy, for personal and communal problems. But this experience at the Korean church made me reflect on the need to place ourselves in God’s hands by way of praising him and worshiping him. And we do almost always pray for everything to turn out well before a special event at church. But we should pray for the worship service that, even though we participate in it every week and are very familiar with the liturgical order, should always be placed in God’s hands, so that it will truly be a spiritual time of inspiration, commitment, hope and genuine worship.

Prayer: God of infinite mercy, we thank you for offering us the privilege of prayer in order to communicate with you.  We pray that we may make use of it not just in difficult moments, but in our entire lives.  In Jesus’s name we pray, amen.

En una ocasión tuve la oportunidad de participar de un servicio litúrgico en una iglesia coreana en Buzán. Antes de comenzar el culto nuestros anfitriones nos dieron un recorrido por los diferentes salones anexos al templo. Recuerdo que había una salita muy acogedora y cuando pregunté qué se hacía en ese lugar me respondieron: Aquí se reúne un pequeño grupo de oración, mientras está desarrollándose el culto. Ellos oran para que todo salga bien, los cantos del coro, la predicación del pastor, y por los diversos momentos de la liturgia. ¡Quedé impactada! Casi siempre hacemos uso de la oración para implorar a Dios por los enfermos y necesitados, por los problemas personales y comunitarios, pero esta experiencia de la iglesia coreana, me hizo reflexionar sobre la necesidad de ponernos en manos de Dios hasta para alabarle y adorarle. Y es que en actividades especiales en la iglesia, casi siempre oramos para que todo salga bien, pero deberíamos orar por el culto que, pues aunque participamos de él cada semana y conocemos muy bien el orden litúrgico, siempre debe ponerse en manos de Dios, para que sea realmente un espacio espiritual de inspiración, compromiso, esperanza y adoración genuina.

Oración: Dios de infinita misericordia, te damos gracias porque tú nos ofreces el privilegio de la oración para comunicarnos contigo. Te pedimos que hagamos uso de ella no sólo en los momentos difíciles, sino en toda nuestra vida. Por Jesús oramos, amén.
