A FRIEND OF GOD

GENESIS 15:1-21

Abraham believed God and God regarded him as righteous.

What is more, Abraham was called God’s friend.

What a special relationship Abraham had with God! Abraham treated God with deep respect, recognizing him as Lord, and he obeyed the instructions He gave, oftentimes confusing ones. But this was not just any relationship, and it was not one-sided.  God considered Abraham his friend as well.

We see their friendship in their conversations. God usually spoke personally with Abraham.  Genesis 15 shows one of these conversations, where Abraham questioned God in a respectful but insistent manner. God did not hide his intentions, but in reality, he began to converse with Abraham.  He listened to him patiently. Abraham was trying to persuade God to not destroy all the righteous people together with the evil ones. They negotiated, and God had pity on the city if he could find only ten righteous people who lived there. And when he could not find the ten, God saved Lot, Abraham’s nephew, and his family before destroying Sodom. 

The friendship of God also is at our disposal. The Psalms speak often of God’s love for those whom he created. With the birth of Jesus, God makes us also his sons and daughters. We respond to this act of love with a committed and faithful life. 

Prayer:  I thank you, Lord, for you are near me and for your friendship with me. Help me to respond to our friendship with sincere communication and faithful witness. Amen.

AMIGO DE DIOS

GENESIS 15:1-21

Abraham creyó a Dios, y le fue contado por justicia,

y fue llamado amigo de Dios

Santiago 2:23

¡Qué relación tan especial tenía Abraham con Dios! Abraham trataba a Dios con profundo respeto, lo reconocía como su Señor y obedecía las instrucciones que Él le daba, a menudo enigmáticas. Pero esta no era una relación cualquiera, no era unilateral: Dios consideraba a Abraham su amigo también.

Vemos su amistad en sus conversaciones. Dios solía hablar personalmente con Abraham. Génesis 15 registra una de esas conversaciones detalladas, en la que Abraham,  de manera respetuosa pero insistente, cuestionó  a Dios. Dios no le ocultó sus intenciones; sino que en realidad se puso a conversar con Abraham. Lo escuchó pacientemente. Abraham intentaba persuadirlo de que no destruyera a los justos juntamente con los malos. Negociaron y Dios aceptó tener piedad de la ciudad si tan solo podía encontrar diez personas justas que vivieran allí. Y cuando no pudo encontrar a diez, Dios salvó a Lot, sobrino de Abraham, y a su familia antes de destruir a Sodoma.

La amistad de Dios también está a nuestra disposición. Los salmos hablan a menudo del amor de Dios por aquellos que creó. Con el nacimiento de Jesús Dios nos hace también sus hijos e hijas. Respondamos a este acto de amor con una vida comprometida y fiel.

Oración: Te agradezco Señor, porque estás cerca de mí y por tu amistad para conmigo. Ayúdame a responder a ella con una comunicación sincera y un fiel testimonio. Amén.
