RESISTENCE TO ACCUMULATION

Matthew 25: 14-30

“Master,” he said, “I know that you are a hard man…”   (NIV)

            Traditionally we’ve seen this parable as a reference to the gifts received that should be put to use. But according to the studious we cannot separate it from the most important message of the Gospels, which is the care of less favored people, (25:31-46).

            The employee who has been called fearful or lacking in love for his master even feels guilt, and recognizes that he receives what he did not produce for himself, and is condemned for his fear, his lack of initiative.

            I ask myself if perhaps this employee wouldn’t be tired of being considered bad because he isn’t encouraged or does not always want to produce more for other people and continue in the role of an employee while others get rich at the expense of his work. I wonder if this is not an act of resistance to the logic of accumulation and abuse by the few. We always insist on criticizing others who have less because they do not work enough; but what if this apparent idleness is nothing but the answer to injustices. I wouldn’t like to see Jesus as the one who gives gifts and rewards or punishes them.

 

Prayer: May we, oh God, never see you associated with the stories where exploitation is legitimized. Amen.

RESISTENCIA A LA ACUMULACION

Mateo 25: 14-30

Señor, yo sabía que Ud. era un hombre duro...

            Tradicionalmente esta parábola la hemos visto como una referencia a los dones recibidos que deben ser puestos en uso. Pero, según estudiosos, esta no la podemos separar del mensaje más importante del evangelio, como es el cuidado de las personas menos favorecidas (25:31-46).

            El empleado que se ha tildado de  miedoso o de falta de amor por su amo, hasta siente  culpa, y reconoce que recibe lo que no produjo por sí mismo, y es condenado por su miedo, su falta de iniciativa.

            Me pregunto si tal vez este empleado no estaríía cansado de que lo consideren mal porque no se anima o no quiere producir siempre más para otras personas, y seguir en la condición de empleado mientras otros se hacen ricos a costa de su trabajo. Me pregunto si esto no es un acto de resistencia ante la lógica de acumulación y de abuso de unos pocos. Siempre insistimos en criticar a otros que tienen menos porque no trabajan lo suficiente, pero que tal si esta aparente ociosidad no es sino la respuesta ante las injusticias.

            No quisiera ver a Jesús como quien otorga los dones, y los premia o castiga.  

 

Oración: Permite oh Dios, que nunca te veamos asociado con las historias donde se legitima la explotación. Amén.
