 GRATITUDE, CARRIER OF HAPPINESS

Philippians 4:1-19

 …bring up all of your requests to God in your prayers and petitions, along with giving thanks.

            Every human being longs to be happy. In my teaching career of more than 10 years I have had mostly professional and scientific students. One question with which I assaulted them before I retired was this: is the grateful person happy? To which they positively and unanimously replied, without conferring with each other, “yes”.

My mother often reminded me to give thanks for everything. I have had pastors who always responded when they were thanked for something: “thanks to you.” But today the custodians in my church comment that when they distribute purified water, most people do not give thanks. It is noteworthy that their faces do not reflect happiness. That is, we realize a hopeful face, sometimes grateful with a dose of humor or a loving, compressible, and transparent smile, is a glowing beacon accompanied by gratitude. Ingratitude is not an omen of happiness.       

The Apostle calls us to be grateful. Gratitude is an integral part of the humility that we must have. It is a spur to enjoy the happiness that God bestows upon us when we can live it and apply it. Paul invites us NOT to grieve for anything, and gratitude is the effective balm.

 

Prayer: Our Father, help us to ask that Your Will be fulfilled, but above all to always thank you for Your love for us. To Your Son, Amen.

LA GRATITUD, PORTADORA DE FELICIDAD

Filipenses 4:1-19

            Todo ser humano ansía ser feliz. En mi carrera docente durante más de 10 lustros he tenido sobre todo alumnos profesionales y científicos. Una pregunta que me asaltó antes de jubilarme fue la siguiente: ¿es la persona agradecida feliz? A lo que unánimemente, sin colegiar unos con otros, confirmaron positivamente: sí.

            Mi madre muchas veces me recordaba dar gracias en todo. He tenido pastores que siempre han respondido cuando le han agradecido algo: -gracias a usted. Pero actualmente los custodios en mi iglesia comentan que en la distribución de agua purificada la mayoría de las personas no dan las gracias, y es de notar que sus rostros no reflejan felicidad. Es decir, nos percatamos cuando hay un rostro esperanzador, agradecido a veces con una dosis de humor o una amorosa, compresible y transparente sonrisa, que es faro resplandeciente acompañado de gratitud. La ingratitud no empasta con esto.

            El Apóstol nos llama a ser agradecidos pues es parte integrante de la humildad que debemos tener como acicate para disfrutar de la felicidad que Dios nos otorga cuando somos capaces de vivirla y aplicarla. Pablo nos invita a NO afligirnos por nada, y un efectivo bálsamo en ello es la gratitud.

 

Oración: Padre Nuestro, ayúdanos a pedir que se cumpla Tu Voluntad, pero sobre todo a darte siempre las gracias por Tu amor hacia nosotros. Por Tu Hijo, Amén.
