Good Friday

ANOTHER PROCESSION

Luke 23: 26-38

A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him.

Friday had arrived. The Sunday before a joyful procession followed behind Jesus acclaiming him as the messianic king who would restore Israel. Now, only a few days later, there was another procession leaving the city, some of them following Jesus in mockery, others out of curiosoty, many with sorrow and lament, but even with deep misunderstandings

The previous Sunday, in the triumphal procession, while others offered objects such as branches of olive and palm, and even their own cloaks, and cloths as a sign of welcome and hospitality, no one was thinking of this contrast: in the midst of the noisy enthusiasm, the silent figure of a donkey signaled the prophecy of Zechariah 9. But while others offered things, the donkey only offered himself, and silently and obediently on his rough back carried the burden of Jesus. As someone pointed out, a donkey was the throne of Jesus in Jerusalem.

On that day, the Lord did the same. Silently and obediently, following the Song of the Servant in Isaiah 53, offered himself, delivered himself for the redemption of humanity, even to those who condemned and mocked him. It is a day of mourning and sadness, certainly, but today must be celebrated as a day of victory, for finally death and evil are overcome.

 

Prayer: We give you thanks, good God, for the sacrifice of Jesus, for his life and his offering in obedience to You. We celebrate the life which you have given us in him. Amen.

Viernes santo

OTRA PROCESIÓN

Lucas 23: 26-38

Lo seguía una gran multitud del pueblo, y de mujeres que lloraban y hacían lamentación por él.

Había llegado el viernes. El domingo anterior una procesión gozosa seguía detrás de Jesús aclamándole como Mesías en la expectativa de haber visto llegar al rey mesiánico que restauraría a Israel. Ahora, tan solo unos días más tarde, hay otra procesión saliendo de la ciudad, algunos siguen a Jesús solo por burla, otros por curiosidad, muchos con dolor y lamento, pero incluso con incomprensiones profundas.

El domingo anterior, en la procesión triunfal,  mientras los demás ofrecen objetos tales como ramos de olivo, de palmeras, y hasta sus propios mantos y lienzos en señal de bienvenida y agasajo, nadie piensa en este contraste: en medio del entusiasmo ruidoso, la silenciosa figura de un burro solo remite a la profecía de Zacarías 9. Pero mientras los demás ofrecen cosas, el borrico se da a sí mismo, y de modo silencioso y obediente sobre sus ásperos lomos lleva el peso de Jesús. Como alguien apuntara: un borrico fue el trono de Jesús en Jerusalén.

El Señor hace lo mismo en este día. De modo silencioso y obediente, siguiendo el cántico del siervo de Isaías 53, se ofrece a sí mismo, se entrega para la redención de la humanidad, incluso de aquella que le condena y se burla de él. Es día de luto y tristeza, ciertamente, pero ha de celebrarse hoy como día de victoria. Porque finalmente la muerte y el mal son vencidos.

 

Oración: Gracias te damos nuestro buen Dios por el sacrificio de Jesús, por su vida y su entrega en obediencia a Ti. Celebramos la vida que nos has dado en él. Amén.
