WOMEN OF OUR DAYS

Mark 5: 25-34

“Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your sufferings.”  (NIV)

When we see the newspapers or hear the story of many women, we understand that, apart from all social and scientific advances, many continue to be frightened when faced with different situations.  In Mark’s text, Jesus says to the woman that she will be healed, that she is already saved, and that she may go in peace. Jesus restores her to a full life.  One needn’t be too imaginative to realize just how terrible life had been for her. An infirmity of that type for any woman is upsetting and can cause sleep deprivation. For Hebrew women, this situation is exacerbated because menstruating was seen as impure, and everything they touched was impure: their husband and their sons.

When discovered, the woman is startled, she had only dared to touch Jesus’ mantle. She didn’t speak. She didn’t make a request, it was only a daring gesture, and now she trembles, thinking about what could happen. Intuitively, she feels healed, but fears Jesus’ reaction. She has suffered so much, and expects the worst. It’s the only case in the Gospels where someone, after being healed, takes fright. She had lived so despised and rejected that she fears showing herself. But Jesus restores her, encouraging her to boldness; and because of that he insists to know who had touched him, so that the woman might speak and make herself known.              

This woman isn’t spoken of again, but her story is repeated in all those who continue daring to touch the mantle.

The essential is: Dare, despite the fright. Jesus continues asking and insisting we say who we are.

 

Prayer:  Lord, may other women continue to dare to touch your mantle to be restored to full life. Amen.

Hija, tu fe te ha salvado, ve en paz y queda sana de tu azote

Cuando vemos los periódicos o escuchamos la historia de muchas mujeres, comprobamos que, a pesar de todos los adelantos de la sociedad y de la ciencia, muchas continúan asustadas ante diferentes situaciones. En el texto de Marcos, Jesús dice a la mujer que quedará sana, que ya es salvada y que se fuera en paz. Jesús la reincorpora a una vida plena. No hay que ser muy imaginativo para darse cuenta de cuán terrible había sido la vida para ella. Para cualquier mujer una enfermedad de ese tipo es molesta y puede ocasionarle grandes trastornos en su vida. Para las mujeres hebreas esta situación se hacía más difícil porque al tener menstruación eran consideradas impuras e impuro todo lo que ellas tocaran: su esposo, sus hijos. Cuando se ve descubierta, la mujer se asusta, ella sólo se había atrevido a tocar el manto; no habló, no pidió, sólo un gesto de atrevimiento, y ahora tiembla de pensar en lo que le pueda pasar; se intuye sana, pero teme a la reacción de Jesús. Ha sufrido tanto que ya espera lo peor. Es el único caso en el Evangelio que un enfermo después de ser sanado tiembla y se atemoriza. Había vivido tan ignorada y rechazada que siente miedo de mostrarse. Pero Jesús la restituye, la alienta a atreverse; quizás por eso insiste en saber quién lo ha tocado, para que la mujer hable y se dé a conocer.

De esta mujer no se nos vuelve a hablar, pero su historia se repite en todas aquellas que se siguen atreviendo a tocar el manto. Esto es lo esencial: atreverse a pesar de los sustos. Jesús sigue preguntando e insistiendo que digamos quiénes somos.

 

Oración: Permite, Señor, que otras mujeres sigan atreviéndose a tocar tu manto para ser restituidas a la vida plena. Amén.
