MESSENGER OF THE LORD

Mark 1:4-11

After me comes the one more powerful than I.

Sometimes when we want to talk about God, what we do is to talk about ourselves, about the good we do. And it is not wrong that when we speak of God’s love, we speak of love for other beings. But sometimes we forget to talk about God himself. Other times what we do is to preach about the church. Inviting other people to church is not wrong. However, we have to recognize that sometimes we forget the real reason for our proclamation. We forget to proclaim the one who has baptized us with the fire of the Spirit.

John the Baptist preached the need for repentance that would lead to forgiveness of sins by God. This was a familiar theme given by the prophets of Israel. John recognized: I am a “messenger” while the one who is coming is the Lord.

Jesus is Lord. That was one of the earliest statements of faith of the church, indicating precisely that faith in him was above all else. And so it must be, to love God with all one’s heart, mind and strength. And in so doing, to bear witness to his grace

 

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, let you be the center of my preaching, that I may tell others about the wonder of your love. In proclaiming your gospel, with all that it implies, may I not forget to preach you. Amen.

MENSAJERO DEL SEÑOR

Viene uno más poderoso que yo

A veces cuando queremos hablar de Dios, lo que hacemos es hablar de nuestra persona, del bien que hacemos. Y no está mal que al hablar del amor de Dios, hablemos del amor hacia los demás seres. Pero en ocasiones olvidamos hablar de Dios en sí. Otras veces lo que hacemos es predicar sobre la iglesia. Invitar a otras personas a la iglesia no está mal. Sin embargo, tenemos que reconocer que a veces se nos olvida la razón verdadera de nuestro anuncio. Olvidamos proclamar a aquel quien nos ha bautizado con el fuego del Espíritu.

Juan el Bautista predicaba la necesidad del arrepentimiento que llevaría al perdón de pecados por Dios. Este era un tema familiar dado por los profetas de Israel. Juan reconocía: Yo soy un “mensajero” mientras que aquel que viene es el Señor.

Jesús es el Señor. Esa fue una de las primeras declaraciones de fe de la iglesia, indicando precisamente que la fe en él estaba por encima de cualquier otra cosa. Y así debe ser, amar a Dios con todo el corazón, mente y fuerzas. Y al hacerlo, dar testimonio de su gracia.

 

Oración: Señor Jesús, permite que tú seas el centro de mi predicación, que yo pueda contarle a otras personas sobre lo maravilloso de tu amor. Permite que al anunciar tu evangelio, con todo lo que ello implica, no me olvide de predicarte a ti. Amén.
