GOD IS MY STRENGTH

Isaiah 40:28-31

Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.

Matthew 11:28 (NRSV)

The Lord is our strength and shield against tribulations. This is what the psalmist declared, certainly because of his own experience, and by the reality of a whole nation which learned to trust in the Lord and obey his Law in the certainty that God works in favor for his own and protects them.

When Isaiah began this second section of the book, in Chapter 40, it happened in the midst of the reality of a nation returning from exile. The circumstances seemed beyond control; they had to restore and settle in a city which their parents had not known, and it seemed strange. It meant a huge task and those were reasons enough for discouragement and giving up.

But now comes the prophetic word that announces that act of God which gives strength to the weary, which is sustenance in the daily struggle, no matter how great it may be. It is the sure promise of God’s protecting and strengthening hand.

Let us remember in the midst of our tribulations and anxieties that God is present in his promises. May they never cease to be fulfilled, and let us praise God with thanks, convinced that  God works for the good, especially in the most difficult situations.

 

Prayer: Heavenly Father, you who are sovereign and good, calm our hearts when we don’t understand why we are facing adversity. May we thank you despite our unfavorable circumstances. Amen.

MI FORTALEZA ESTÁ EN ÉL

Isaías 40:28-31

Venid a mí, todos lo que estáis trabajados y cargados, y yo os haré descansar

El Señor es nuestra fuerza y es escudo frente a las tribulaciones. Así lo declaraba el salmista, ciertamente por experiencia propia y por la realidad de toda una nación que aprendía a confiar en el Señor y obedecer su Ley, en la certeza de que Dios obra a favor de los suyos y los protege.

Cuando Isaías comienza esta segunda sección del libro, en el capítulo 40, lo hace en medio de la realidad de una nación que regresa del exilio. Las circunstancias parecerían fuera de control, pues restaurar y asentarse nuevamente en una ciudad que ya no era lo que conocieron sus padres, y que se les mostraba extraña, implicando una descomunal labor, era razones suficientes como para el desánimo y la rendición.

Pero ahí llega la palabra profética anunciando ese actuar de Dios que da fuerzas al cansado, que sostiene en medio de la lucha diaria, por inmensa que sea. Está la promesa siempre segura de su mano protectora y fortalecedora.

Recordemos en medio de nuestras tribulaciones y angustias, que Dios está presente en sus promesas. Que no cesan de cumplirse, y alabémosle con acción de gracias, convencidos de que el Señor obra lo bueno aún a partir de las más difíciles situaciones.

 

Oración: Padre Celestial, tú que eres soberano y bueno, calma nuestros corazones cuando no entendamos por qué pasamos por la adversidad. Permite que sepamos agradecerte a pesar de nuestras circunstancias desfavorables. Amén.
