133rd Anniversary of the Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba

FROM OUR ROOTS

1 Peter 2:4-10

He took one of the seedlings of the land and put it in fertile soil… and it sprouted and became a low, spreading vine.

Marcial, the protaganist of Alejo Carpentier’s “Journey Back to the Source” travels back through time from death to youth and childhood in a journey that culminates in the womb. We do something similar every June 26^th, evoking the humble beginnings of the Presbyterian Church in Cuba. Our journey back contemplates a succession of images, facts and faces through which our Cuban Presbyterian identity flows in time.

What it means to be a Presbyterian in Cuba cannot be explained in a finished or closed way, because being a Cuban Presbyterian is something that is being built day-by-day, in the answers to the challenges that life brings us, illuminated by the Word and under the certain guidance of the Holy Spirit. That seed that one day was planted and watered by Reverend Evaristo Collazo, and that God made grow, was made-as the prophet tells us-into a vine, with many branches, and that sank its roots in the ground.

That vine is our present Presbyterian-Reformed Church in Cuba, that with its 133 years is still young and does not cease to work in favor of our people, and to help sustain in faith a faithful community of followers of Jesus Christ. Those of us who have watered and cared for this beautiful plant have done what the Lord commanded us to do, but today we are more Presbyterians because it is God that has sustained us this far.

 

Prayer: Lord, thank you for calling us to be part of your Church, your redeemed people who today strive for service and reconciliation for a Cuba that so needs it. Amen.

Aniversario 133 de la IPRC

DESDE NUESTRAS RAICES

1 Pedro 2:4-10

Tomó una semilla, y fue a sembrarla en buena tierra… La semilla creció, y se convirtió en una vid…

Ezequiel 17:5-6

Marcial, protagonista de “Viaje a la semilla”, de Alejo Carpentier, viaja en el tiempo desde la muerte a la juventud y la infancia en un recorrido que culmina en el vientre materno. Así hacemos cada 26 de junio, al evocar los humildes inicios de la Iglesia Presbiteriana en Cuba. Nuestro viaje a la semilla contempla una sucesión de imágenes, hechos y rostros a través de los que fluye en el tiempo nuestra identidad presbiteriana cubana.

Lo que significa ser presbiteriano en Cuba no se puede explicar de manera acabada o cerrada, porque ser presbiteriano cubano es algo que se va construyendo en el día a día, en las respuestas a los desafíos que la vida nos trae, iluminados por la Palabra y bajo la guía certera del Espíritu Santo. Aquella semilla que un día plantó y regó el reverendo Evaristo Collazo, y que Dios hizo crecer, se convirtió -al decir del profeta- en una vid, con muchas ramas, y que hundió sus raíces en el suelo.

Esa vid es nuestra actual Iglesia Presbiteriana-Reformada en Cuba, que con sus 133 años es todavía joven y no cesa de trabajar a favor de nuestro pueblo, y de ayudar a sostener en la fe a una fiel comunidad de seguidores de Jesucristo. Quienes hemos regado y cuidado esta hermosa planta hemos hecho lo que el Señor nos mandó hacer, pero hoy somos más presbiterianos porque es Dios quien nos ha sostenido hasta aquí.

 

Oración: Señor, gracias por llamarnos a ser parte de tu Iglesia, tu pueblo redimido que hoy se esfuerza en el servicio y la reconciliación para una Cuba que tanto lo necesita. Amén.
