TRUE STRENGTH

Nehemiah 8:5-10

Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The Lord, the Lord himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation.

Isaiah 12:2 (NIV)

Life is never rosy, that we know; not all moments are full of happiness, well-being, or pleasure, because many times there is pain, affliction, or trial. All human beings go through these kinds of experiences. But certainly, some of these are consequences of our own actions, we are responsible for what happens to us for having been indolent or foolish in what we have done.

The people of Israel lived many of these kinds of experiences in relation to their lives of faith, and the fulfillment of the Law as was demanded in the Old Testament. Precisely for these types of occasions, the means for restoration were provided in the Law itself, under the premise of repentance, and certain external prescriptions that indicated it.

In the text for today, the people gathered after their return from exile, so they could hear anew and know firsthand the Law that they had ignored for such a long time, feeling a sadness that grew when they recognized how far they had strayed from acting according to the divine will. It is beautiful to read what the leaders say to the nation then, asking them not to be sad; “… do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

 

Prayer: Thank you Lord because in the middle of the adversity that we live, and of the consequences of our actions, you pour out the joy that strengthens us. Thank you for that infinite goodness. Amen.

VERDADERA FORTALEZA

Nehemías 8:5-10

He aquí Dios es salvación mía, me aseguraré y no temeré, porque mi fortaleza y mi canción es el Señor, quien ha sido salvación para mí

Isaías 12:2

La vida nunca es color de rosas, eso lo sabemos; no todos los momentos son de felicidad, bienestar o placer, pues en muchas ocasiones aparece el dolor, la aflicción, la prueba. Todos los seres humanos pasamos por estas experiencias. Pero ciertamente existen algunas de ellas que son consecuencias de nuestro actuar, somos los responsables de lo que nos acontece por haber sido indolentes o insensatos en lo que hemos hecho.

El pueblo de Israel vivió muchísimas de este tipo de experiencias en relación con su vida de fe, y el cumplimiento de la Ley tal como era demandado en el Antiguo Testamento. Precisamente para este tipo de ocasiones se proveían los medios en la misma Ley para la restauración, bajo la premisa del arrepentimiento, y de ciertas prescripciones externas que así lo indicaran.

En el texto de hoy, el pueblo congregado tras el regreso del exilio, para escuchar nuevamente y conocer de primera mano la Ley que habían ignorado por tanto tiempo, siente una tristeza que le embarga al reconocer cuán lejos habían estado de obrar conforma a la voluntad divina. Es hermoso leer lo que dicen los líderes de la nación entonces, al pedir que no se entristecieran: “…no estén tristes, porque el gozo del Señor es nuestra fuerza”.

 

Oración: Gracias Señor porque en medio de la adversidad que vivimos, y de las consecuencia de nuestro actuar, tú derramas un gozo que nos fortalece. Gracias por esa bondad infinita. Amén.
