A key response

Matthew 16: 13 -23

And you, who do you say I am? (NIV)

Matthew 13:15

The Gospels are written years after the death of Jesus. This morning’s portion shares with us how they recognized Jesus. Those who knew something about him had heard a story, and his disciples were the ones who were closest. Likewise,  Matthew’s community. This is reflected in this text.

People understand Jesus from a perspective of tradition, law and the prophets, so Jesus becomes a great prophet, because of what he does and teaches. He is a teacher. Difficult to get out of an inherited interpretation of what the Messiah would be like, it is with continuous walking close to Jesus and with God’s help that the community can recognize Jesus as the Son of God.

Sometimes in our lives, it is also difficult for us to get out of what we have inherited, to recognize the Son of God, to act freely as he is in our life.

Today, how do our lives speak of the Jesus we know? What would we write today about who Jesus is?

 

Prayer: Dear God, help us to recognize Jesus, to see him as he is, without prejudice. May we see him where he is acting, in the faces of those close to him. Amen.

Y ustedes, ¿quién dicen  que  soy?

Los evangelios son escritos años después de la muerte de  Jesús. La porción de esta mañana nos comparte cómo  reconocían a Jesús. Los que sabían algo de Él, habían  escuchado alguna historia y sus discípulos, eran los que  estaban más cerca: así también la comunidad de  Mateo, esto queda reflejado en este texto.

La gente entiende a Jesús desde una perspectiva de la  tradición, la  ley  y los profetas, así que Jesús viene a ser un gran  profeta, por  lo  que hace y enseña, es un maestro.  Difícil salirse de una interpretación heredada de cómo  sería el Mesías, es con el caminar continuo cerca de Jesús y  con la ayuda de  Dios  que la comunidad puede reconocer a  Jesús como el Hijo de  Dios.

En ocasiones en nuestra vida también nos cuesta salirnos  de  lo  heredado, para reconocer al Hijo de  Dios  actuar  libremente como es en la vida.

¿Cómo habla nuestra vida hoy del Jesús que conocemos?  ¿Qué escribiríamos hoy de quién es Jesús?

 

Oración: Amado  Dios  ayúdanos a reconocer a Jesús, a  verle tal cual es, sin prejuicios. Que podamos verle donde  está actuando, en los rostros de quienes tenemos cerca.  Amén
