TO BE LIKE CHILDREN

Matthew 19: 13-15

Whoever becomes humble like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew  18: 4 (NRSV)

In reading this passage, we might be led to think that the disciples were insensitive and vain or that they were protecting Jesus from distractions. But Jesus tells them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” In so doing, he defines their humility as the model for discipleship.

I have taught Sunday School, and of the age groups I have worked with, the one that impacted me and exerted the greatest force on me is that of the children; they are also the most enjoyable because of their sincerity and spontaneity during the class. Innocence is translated into wisdom that impresses; language is reduced in words and enriched with gestures. The best techniques for teaching the Gospel are overcome with simple games and sessions of music and drawing.

And as the years go by, we see that many continue on the path of faith, not only because they remain regular participants in our congregations, but also because they carry  the growth of these teachings in their walk through life.

 

Prayer: Lord, help us to be like children as we try to follow you. Amen.

SER COMO NIÑOS

Mateo 19: 13-15

Por tanto, el que se humilla como este niño será el más grande en el reino de los cielos.

Mateo  18: 4

Al leer este pasaje, pudiéramos pensar que los discipulos eran insensibles y vanidosos, o que estaban protegiendo a Jesús de distracciones. Pero Jesús les dice: Dejen que los niños se vengan a mi, y no se lo impidan, porque el reino de los cielos es de quienes son como ellos. Asi define la humildad de éstos como el modelo para el discipulado.

 

He sido maestro de Escuela Dominical, y de los grupos de edades con los que he trabajado, el que más me impacta y exige mayor esfuerzo es el de niñas y niños, pero también es el que más disfruto por su sinceridad y espontaneidad durante la clase. La inocencia se traduce en sabiduria que impresiona, el lenguaje se reduce en palabras y se enriquece con gestos, las mejores técnicas para la enseñanza del Evangelio se superan con simples juegos y sesiones de música y dibujo.

Y cuando pasan los años, vemos que muchos continúan en el camino de la fe, no solo porque se mantienen asiduos participantes en nuestras congregaciones, sino también porque llevan en su andar por la vida el crecimiento de esas enseñanzas.
