HOW MUCH WE LACK!

Matthew 19: 16-22

“Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?”

Matthew 19: 16b (NRSV)

It is striking that the encounter between Jesus and the rich young man is narrated in three of the Gospels almost totally alike, which echoes the impact that it had on the disciples and other witnesses to it. This rich young man who said he had fulfilled all the commandments, was upright, but felt that he lacked some good to do in order to obtain eternal life, so he asked the Master’s advice. Jesus’ response is blunt.

● There is only one good: God.

● The “good thing” to do begins with fulfilling God’s commandments, but there is much more than that.

● And “Come, follow me” is a command so radical that it implies leaving everything in God’s hands. But when it came to that, he couldn’t do it.

Jesus dismisses him because he shows that he cannot love neighbor as himself, nor is God at the center of his life: only himself and his riches.

Let’s look around us and share with those who are more vulnerable all that God has provided for us. (To be continued . . . .)

 

Prayer: Lord, forgive our indifference, and etch on our heart that salvation is not acquired through riches or property. Amen.

¡CUÁNTO NOS FALTA!

Mateo 19: 16-22

Maestro, ¿qué de bueno tengo que hacer para obtener la vida eterna?

Mateo 19: 16b.

Llama la atención que el encuentro de Jesús y el joven rico se narra en tres de los Evangelios y casi con total similitud, lo que presupone el impacto que causó entre los discípulos y otros testigos del mismo. Este joven rico, se dice cumplidor de los mandamientos, íntegro, pero siente que algo le faltaba hacer “de bueno” para obtener la “vida eterna”; y pidió consejo al Maestro. Las respuestas de Jesús son contundentes:

● Hay uno sólo que es bueno: Dios.

● La “cosa buena” a hacer se inicia con cumplir los mandamientos de Dios. Pero va mucho más allá.

● Y ven, sígueme es un mandamiento tan radical que implica dejarlo todo en manos de Dios. Pero no fue capaz de llegar hasta el final.

Jesús lo descarta porque demuestra que no ama a su prójimo como a sí mismo, ni está Dios en el centro de su corazón; sino él y sus riquezas.

Miremos a nuestro alrededor y compartamos con otros más vulnerables todo lo que Dios nos provee. (Continuará...).

 

Oración: Señor, perdona nuestra indiferencia y graba en nuestro corazón que la salvación no se gana con riquezas o propiedades Amén.
