THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30th

FOLLOW ME

At once they left their nets and followed him.

Matthew 4: 20 (NIV)

The Gospel tells us about the first call of Jesus to his disciples, the two pairs of fisherman brothers: Simon Peter and Andrew, James and John. What resources does the Master use to summon his disciples? At that moment he has no popularity to back him up, nor does he arrive with promises or threats. He calls his followers; he leaves them the freedom to follow him or not. He passes by, while these men are going about their daily work and says to them: Follow me.

Although Jesus initiates it, the call is only effective for those who are ready to respond promptly and generously, for those who are not anchored to material possession and are free to follow him.

Our vocation is essential to the following of Jesus. It is something that, as Christians, we must never neglect, because we are called every day, and we must be prepared to listen to him and follow him. Let us reflect for a few moments on how we are responding today to Jesus’ call.

 

Prayer: Loving Father, thank you for choosing us. Allow us to be worthy of that calling and renew it every day. Amen.

JUEVES, 30 DE NOVIEMBRE

SÍGANME

Mateo 4:18-22

En ese mismo instante, Pedro y Andrés dejaron sus redes y siguieron a Jesús.

Mateo 4: 20

El Evangelio nos relata el primer llamado de Jesús a sus discipulos, las dos parejas de hermanos pescadores; Simón Pedro y Andrés, Santiago y Juan ¿Qué recursos usa el Maestro para convocar a sus discipulos? En ese momento no tiene popularidad que lo respalde, no llega con promesas, ni con amenazas; no pronuncia largos discursos para convencer. Jesús llama a sus seguidores, les deja a ellos la libertad de seguirlo o no. Él pasa, mientras estos hombres están en sus labores cotidianas, y les dice: Síganme .

Y es que, aunque la iniciativa es de Jesús, el llamado sólo es efectivo en quienes están prestos a la respuesta pronta y generosa, para quienes no están anclados a las posesiones materiales y tienen libertad de aligerarse y seguirlo.

Nuestra vocación es esencial al seguimiento de Jesús, es algo que, como cristianos y cristianas, no debemos descuidar nunca, pues somos llamados cada dia, y debemos tener la preparación para escucharle y seguirle. Reflexionemos algunos segundos en cuanto a cómo es nuestra respuesta hoy al llamado de Jesús.

 

Oración: Padre amado, gracias por escogernos. Permitenos ser dignos de ese llamado y renovarlo cada dia. Amén.

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29th

COMPLAINT OR TESTIMONY?

Luke 21: 12-19

And so you will bear testimony to me.

Luke 21: 13 (NIV)

Jesus does not announce a smooth path for his followers. He tells them that it will be difficult, but that only those who are able to see in the situations of conflict or anguish that lie ahead, an opportunity to confirm the divine presence in our midst, will be his true witnesses.

In spite of this teaching, complaining invades our communities today; the weekly meeting becomes a pretext to complain about the heat, the shortages, the idleness and indolence of which we are victims every day, the discomforts and illnesses. . . . But, where is the opportunity to which we are called by Jesus, to bear witness to Him? Are we aware that the mental attitude of scarcity is the complaint? Living a complaining life enslaves us, it prevents us from seeing with gratitude the many blessings that God pours out to us each day.

This morning let us do an exercise, thinking about the challenges that lie ahead of us in our journey and let us repeat to each one of them: “It will be an opportunity to give testimony of Christ”. Let us enter this new day with an attitude of gratitude, so that we may be filled with the abundance that God offers us.

 

Prayer: Thank you, Father, for everything you give me, even when I am not capable of perceiving it. May I be able to live this and every day, finding myself also, in every trial that comes my way. Amen.

MIÉRCOLES, 29 DE NOVIEMBRE

¿QUEJA O TESTIMONIO?

Lucas 21: 12-19

Esa será una oportunidad para que ustedes hablen de mí.

Lucas 21: 13

Jesús no anuncia un camino llano para sus seguidores. Él les adelanta que será dificil, pero que sólo serán verdaderos testigos suyos quienes sean capaces de ver en las situaciones de conflicto o angustia que se avecinan, una oportunidad para dar confirmación de la presencia divina en medio nuestro.

A pesar de esta enseñanza, la queja invade hoy a nuestras comunidades; el reencuentro cada semana se vuelve un pretexto para lamentarse del calor, la escasez, la desidia e indolencia de las que somos victimas a diario, los malestares y enfermedades...pero, l,dónde queda entonces la oportunidad a la que somos llamados por Jesús, de dar testimonio suyo? l,Somos conscientes de que la actitud mental de la escasez, es la queja? Vivir una vida quejumbrosa nos esclaviza, nos impide ver con gratitud las muchas bendiciones que Dios derrama sobre nosotros a diario.

En esta mañana hagamos un ejercicio, pensemos en los desafios que tiene por delante nuestra jornada y repitamos ante cada uno: “Será una oportunidad para dar testimonio de Cristo”. Entremos en este nuevo dia con una actitud de gratitud, para poder llenarnos de la abundancia que Dios nos ofrece.

 

Oración: Gracias Padre por todo lo que me das, aun cuando no sea capaz de percibirlo. Permite que yo pueda vivir este y todos los dias, encontrándome también, en cada prueba que se me presente. Amén.

TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28th

ATTENTIVE TO OTHERS

Matthew 25:31-46

“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Matthew 25: 40 (NIV)

Our brains have an area called the Ascending Reticular Activation System, that functions as a filter and is the one that makes us find in real life, when we have a purpose, what we need to fulfill it. This part filters from all the stimuli we receive from the environment around us, only that which truly interests us as an individual. Often, this area of our brain is totally focused on our personal needs, and they are so many that we live them so intensely, that we are blinded to the needs of others, and a whole day can pass without us finding the opportunity to serve someone else.

The reality is that life is full of opportunities to do good, to care for others, to give encouragement to those who are suffering, to share with those who have none, or to be a companion to those who feel alone. Only, perhaps, that is not a purpose for us today, and for that reason we cannot see the demand for help that is all around us.

May God grant that, inspired by the text, we may find a new purpose for our day: to remain attentive to serve our Lord.

 

Prayer: Father, open our eyes to the needs of those around us. May your infinite love help us to make this a daily purpose. Amen.

MARTES, 28 DE NOVIEMBRE

ATENTOS A LOS DEMÁS

Mateo 25:31-46

Y el rey responderá: “De cierto les digo que todo lo que hicieron por uno de mis hermanos más pequeños, por mí lo hicieron”

Nuestro cerebro tiene una zona llamada Sistema de Activación Reticular Ascendente, que funciona como un filtro y es la que hace que, cuando tenemos un propósito, podamos encontrar en la vida real, aquello que necesitamos para cumplirlo. Esta parte filtra, de todos los estimulos que recibimos del medio que nos rodea, solo aquellos que verdaderamente nos interesan como individuo. A menudo esta zona de nuestro cerebro está totalmente enfocada en nuestras necesidades personales, y es que son tantas y las vivimos con tanta intensidad, que nos cegamos a las necesidades ajenas, y pasa todo un dia sin que encontremos la oportunidad de servir a otra persona.

La realidad es que la vida está llena de oportunidades para hacer el bien, para cuidar de otros, dar aliento a quienes sufren, compartir con quien no tiene o servir de compañia a quien se siente solo. Solo que, quizás esto no sea un propósito para nosotros hoy, y por eso no podemos ver la demanda de ayuda que hay a nuestro alrededor.

Permita Dios que, inspirados por el texto, podamos encontrarle un nuevo propósito a nuestro d ia: mantenernos atentos para servir a nuestro Señor.

 

Oración: Padre, abre nuestros ojos a la necesidad de quienes nos rodean. Que tu amor infinito nos ayude a hacer de esto un propósito diario. Amén.
