WE ARE BROTHERS

Matthew 23: 12

The greatest among you will be your servant.

Matthew 23: 11 (NRSV)

In today’s text Matthew shows Jesus in an attack directed against the scribes and Pharisees, using a language that is strong and willing to make enemies when the cause demanded it.

Despite unmasking them as hypocrites, his interest was not so much in their acts as individuals but in the system of religious observances that they upheld. He uncovers the contrast between the true values of the Kingdom of Heaven and the superficial form of the religion which was imposed on the basis of complying with voluminous standards and rules. Thus, they run the risk of giving greater fulfillment to the “system” than to God’s will.

In contrast, Jesus exhorts his disciples not to seek position, but to be content with taking the most humble positions and serving others.

This exhortation is also for our time of discipleship.

 

Prayer: Lord, allow us to be able to syncronize our performance as disciples and your will. Amen.

El más importante entre ustedes ser siervo de los demás.

Mateo 23: 11

En el texto de hoy Mateo muestra a Jesús en un ataque dirigido contra los escribas y fariseos, empleando un lenguaje fuerte y dispuesto a hacer enemigos cuando la causa lo demandara.

A pesar de desenmascararlos como “hipócritas”, su interés no era tanto la actuación de éstos como individuos, sino más bien con el sistema de observancias religiosas que sostenían. Pone al descubierto el contraste entre los verdaderos valores del Reino de los cielos y la forma superficial de la religión que imponían, sobre las bases de que se cumplieran las voluminosas normas y reglas. Así corren el peligro de darle mayor cumplimiento al “sistema” que a la voluntad de Dios.

En contraste Jesús exhorta a sus discípulos a que no deben procurar posición, sino sentirse felices de tomar los lugares más humildes y servir a los demás.

Esta exhortación también es para nuestro tiempo de discipulado.

 

Oración: Señor, permite que podamos sincronizar nuestro desempeño como discípulos y tu voluntad. Amén.
