OBEYING THE LAW, OR HELPING A NEIGHBOR?

Luke 14:1-6

Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law,“Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”

In all areas of life, we find rules and norms that guide our actions and place us in a binary understanding of right and wrong. What is dangerous about these frameworks is the lack of flexibility with which we make assumptions, pushing aside all that is outside of them without the slightest possibility of dialogue. That is the reason why the Pharisees could not understand Jesus’ actions.

In the Jewish tradition, the Sabbath is a day of rest, only for prayer and dedication to God. But the Master’s question directly removes the bases of this tradition, not to undermine or demerit it, but to lead us to a reflection that there is a deeper essence than the doctrines. Is it more important to God to rest on the Sabbath or to heal a sick person? Is it more important to God to give the greatest offering in the church, or to be attentive to the elderly neighbor that lives alone? Is it more important to God to have the appointment of the leaders, or to make community by accepting and respecting my sisters and brothers with relationships that promote the family love to which Christ called us?

Let us not be Pharisees judging those who share their practice of faith from a different place. Let us find the courage, like Jesus, to put compassion above dogmas, always having the common good as our horizon.

 

Prayer: God of life, may no obligation keep me from going blindly in the face of the needs of my neighbor in need. Amen.

¿CUMPLIR LA LEY, O AYUDAR AL PRÓJIMO?

Lucas 14:1-6

Entonces Jesús habló a los intérpretes de la ley y a los fariseos, diciendo: ¿Es lícito sanar en el día de reposo?

En todos los ámbitos de la vida encontramos normas que conducen nuestro accionar y nos colocan en una binaria comprensión del bien y el mal. Lo peligroso de estos marcos es la falta de flexibilidad con que los asumimos, apartando todo lo que queda fuera sin la más minima posibilidad de diálogo. Esa es la razón por la cual los fariseos no podian comprender las acciones de Jesús.

En la tradición jud ia, el sábado es dia de descanso, sólo se ora y se dedica a Dios. Pero la pregunta del Maestro remueve directamente las bases de esta tradición, no para socavarla o demeritarla, sino para llevarnos a la reflexión de que hay una esencia más profunda que las doctrinas. l,Será para Dios más importante descansar el sábado, o sanar a un enfermo? l,Será más importante para Dios dar la mayor ofrenda en la iglesia, o estar atento del vecino anciano que vive solo? l,Será más importante para Dios tener el nombramiento de lideres, o hacer comunidad aceptando y respetando a mis hermanas y hermanos con relaciones que promuevan el amor familiar al que Cristo nos llamó?

No seamos fariseos juzgando a quienes comparten su práctica de fe desde un lugar diferente. Encontremos la valentia, como Jesús, para poner la compasión por encima de los dogmas, siempre teniendo como horizonte el bien común.
