MONDAY, JANUARY 15

A NEW WINESKIN

Mark 2: 18-22

No one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skin, and both the wine and the wineskin will be lost. No, new wine is poured into new wineskins.  (NIV)

Mark 2: 22

In Jesus’ time, the wineskin (a piece of leather) was used to store wine. The ideal leather was new, because when the wine was still fermenting, it needed room to expand. When the old wineskin would not allow the wine to expand properly because it was already stretched. If new wine was put into an old wineskin, it would break and the wine would spill out.

What does Jesus teach us with this metaphor? Let’s renew our spirits. Let’s prepare for the changes. Let’s prepare to open our minds for constant growth and learning. Let’s get rid of fundamentalisms. Let’s build a church that reforms itself again and again, that adjusts to new times, to new people.

 

Prayer: Holy Spirit, pour into us the desire to build a new church; allows our hearts to be open to new challenges. Make us a new wineskin. Amen.

UN ODRE NUEVO

Marcos 2: 18-22

Y nadie echa vino nuevo en odres viejos; de otra manera, el vino nuevo rompe los odres, y el vino se derrama, y los odres se pierden; pero el vino nuevo en odres nuevos se ha de echar.

En la época de Jesús, el odre (pieza de cuero) se usaba para almacenar vino. El cuero ideal era el nuevo porque cuando el vino aún estaba fermentando necesitaba espacio para expandirse; mientras que el viejo no permitia que el vino se expandiera correctamente porque el odre ya estaba estirado; y si se echaba vino nuevo en odre viejo, este se rompia y se derramaba el vino.

¿Qué nos enserra Jesús con esta metáfora? Renovemos nuestros espiritus. Preparémonos para los cambios. Dispongámonos para abrir nuestras mentes para el constante crecimiento y aprendizaje. Desechemos los fundamentalismos. Construyamos una Iglesia que se reforme una y otra vez, que se ajuste a los nuevos tiempos, a la gente nueva.

 

Oración: Espiritu Santo, derrama en nosotros y nosotras el deseo de construir una Iglesia nueva; permite que nuestros corazones estén abiertos a los nuevos desafios. Haz de nosotros y nosotras un odre nuevo. Amén.
