SUFFERING AND
PATIENCE
JAMES 5: 7-11
As an example of suffering
and patience, beloved,
take the prophets who spoke in the name of
the Lord.
James 5: 10
I’m among those who take extreme caution in referring to sacrifice. I do so because of the
immense quantity of outrages committed in the name of sacrifice throughout humanity’s
history. We’ve only to remember how the state of poverty for millions was
justified as a worldly sacrifice, one
allowing the afflicted to be able to reach eternity’s glory. Nevertheless, the
sacrifice implied in this part of James’ text is that of prophetic sacrifice,
the natural consequence of a way of life consecrated to God that affirms peace and
rejects being party to injustice or evil. The epistle doesn’t speak of the
examples of suffering and patience
for no good reason. Patience is a virtue which seals sacrifice with hope.
Without patience the prophets would have despaired of their mission, leaving their
communities untouched by God’s message. Persevere, have patience, hope, these
are the gifts that should accompany suffering, not to justify and perpetuate it,
rather to detect its end and finish it.
There are many motives that strengthen our prophetic vocation in
our country today; and naturally, we suffer tensions, dangers, and loss of spaces
as a consequence. But have patience and persevere to the end. God is with us,
and encourages us amid our great and small challenges!
Prayer: God of life, justice,
and peace, make us your servants as you did the prophets. Take our sufferings
in your hands and give us the patience to persevere with faith in the journey you
have traced for us. Amen.

El sufrimiento y la
paciencia
Santiago 5:7-11
Hermanos míos, tomen como ejemplo de sufrimiento
y de paciencia a los profetas que hablaron en nombre
del Señor.
Santiago 5:10
Soy de los que se refiere al sacrificio con
sumo cuidado. Lo hago así porque en nombre del sacrificio se han cometido una
gran cantidad de atropellos a lo largo de la historia de la humanidad. Sólo
recordemos cómo la condición de pobreza de millones de personas fue justificada
como un sacrificio terrenal para poder alcanzar la gloria de la
eternidad. Sin embargo, el sacrificio que es puesto como ejemplo en esta
porción del texto de Santiago es el sacrificio profético: la consecuencia
natural de una forma de vida consagrada a Dios, que hace votos por la paz y que
no soporta ser testigo de la injusticia, ni la maldad. No por gusto la epístola
habla del ejemplo de sufrimiento y de paciencia. La paciencia es esa
virtud que sella al sacrificio con esperanza. Sin paciencia los profetas y
profetisas hubieran desesperado en su misión y ni siquiera habrían impactado a
sus comunidades con el mensaje de Dios. Perseverar, tener paciencia, esperar…
estos son dones que deben acompañar al sufrimiento, no para justificarlo y perpetuarlo,
sino para avizorar su fin, culminarlo.
Hoy existen muchos motivos que fortalecen nuestra vocación profética en
nuestro país, y por supuesto que la consecuencia del sufrimiento por tensiones,
peligros, pérdida de espacios, también se alza frente a nosotros. Pero tengamos
paciencia y perseveremos hasta el fin ¡Dios está con nosotros y nos alienta en
medio de los desafíos grandes y pequeños!
Oración:
Dios de la vida, la justicia y la paz, haz de nosotros tus siervos y siervas al
estilo de los profetas; toma en tus manos nuestros sufrimientos y danos la
paciencia para perseverar con fe en el camino que nos has trazado. Amén.
